Its really up to you regarding gear. Any decent rod with a stiff backbone 6-7ft would be a good start. A medium sized spinning reel with some 8-12lb line would be a good start.
Any combo in $75 (and up) range should be decent enough to give you trouble free operation.
Head in to Reaction Fly and Tackle if you are close to their. They will be able to set you up with gear and lures/plastics that will help. Don't go fly blind into a walmart or crappy tire. Use advice, its why tackle stores are always the best option.
I would urge you to go the spin casting route for a while, before baitcasting. Unless you have experience throwing one, it will cause you more headaches than it is worth, especially when you are just starting out.
