Chilliwack River, January 24th 2010
« on: January 24, 2010, 02:01:58 PM »

hello there,

Welll I had hit up freds tackle at about 9am, then i had got to the river at about 9 30, looking to get my first steelie of the year.  the water conditions were very good in the mid/bottom of the river . i tied up my leader and put some bait on my hook and started to cast. after about 30 minutes of fishing i moved down river a bit and lit a fire and started to cast out again then after about 40 minutes of fishing i felt a tug at the end of my line.BOOM !! fish on.. ;D.after about 5 minuets of fighting this  approximately 11 pound steelhead .Snap  there goes my line and my fish :'( didn't get another bit for the rest of the day. so i had packed it in for the day. Overall a great first trip of the year for me ;D

We saw you guys light the fire, and saw you lose the fish, your float came down past us. I was fishing from the other side from you guys. The water was quite nice, no luck for us though.

I am curious as to where your line snapped.

I've had an issue with DNE hooks tied on with a bait loop in the past.
It looks like the end of the hook in the eye has been cutting through the bait loop.

well seeing as he lost the float i would assume it broke at or above the float  :'( make sure you check for line flaws regularly

I agree that Maxima Ultragreen is very strong stuff.  I wouldn't go any heavier than 15lb myself and have never felt the need to use anything heavier than 10lb leader.
You'll be happier with 15lb mainline and you can fit alot more of it on your spool. :)

Thanks for the report.  I may head out tomorrow and swing some new fly patterns.

You can get a much longer cast with a lighter line - I can cast all the way across the river using 12 to 14lb main line.

I am trying a new Trilene line (I forget the exact name, I normally use Big Game) in 14lb - stays relatively limp even in cold weather.

Respool your reel with heavier line in the summer for Chinook & Chum.
I use a plastic pop bottle with a large screw epoxied inside the cap and chuck it up in my cordless drill to remove the old line.
