i just finished 2 dozen for one dude, and got an order of 10 dozen for another guy, with possibly another  5 if he likes the initial batch. Business is decent.

I learned mostly everything on my own however i have picked up a bunch of techniques just by asking at my local shop and them showing me  ;D most fly fishing books, videos online(youtube) or tying videos will show you plenty enough to get you going and producing nice flies in no time. fly tying classes are also a big asset but not entirely necessary these days with all the other resources.

dont go at it thinking you will save money on flies though like most do, fly tying only allows you to tie more flies with the materials you have but it certainly doesnt save money LOL the biggest thing i like about tying is being able to create flies that you cant buy in a store, sometimes they become flops and dotn produce, other times you find a gem and it out produces everything  ;D

actually the time to start tying your trout flies is now while everything is frozen over in the interior. So far i have got about 300 flies done and another 200-300 yet to go for family/friends  ::) good thing they buy everything for them except for my time  >:(

I start tying salmon flies usually in the spring/summer while im lake fishing and any trout flies i might need of course. I tie steely flies during the fall while im salmon fishing and into the middle of steely season. I do this im always ahead of the game when it comes to flies.

When it comes to trout flies i normally have at least a dozen of each fly in each size and colour combination, if its an experiment fly then i will do up 3 so i have a couple incase it gets torn apart by fish or a snag. If its a fly pattern i use alot then i will tie enough for the season like say a few chironomids i use alot of, I normally have a couple dozen on me at all times  ;D
