I had an extension put on a light Trophy pin-rod to use on smaller flows.
It is about 14 inches from back of the seat to the tip of the butt.
Being able to tuck it under my arm was the idea and it is now very comfy and super light.
I dont know how them guys can fish with there arms extended out all day like they do with the short butt section.
I figure if i need my tip to be that high off the water i should have bought a longer rod.

I have a 9 nich sometimes I wish it was shorter, but like Dion said when fighting fish its nice and long casts are nice with the longer but, maybe its time to go to a slideing reel seat...................

--if getting custom made why not try a but extension like on a fly rod?  should allow for different sizes if you don't want to use sliding seat.

swiftwater just built me a rod, 15 in the front, 5 on the back. Sweet stick IMO

4.5" but the rod that I'm currently using the builder messed up and did 5.5" but I actually kinda like it now

What do these custom rods set you guys back? I am thinking of doing one.

that all depends on what you use for components. you could use a rainshadow/forecast blank and spend around 120 bucks.  or you could buy say a sage at around 280. then you can get into a myriad of different cork,guides and reel seat. commonly it will cost you around 300 bucks for the finished rod not including your blank. One thing i cannot stress enough is to use QUALITY guides. do it once do it right, dont cheap out and regret it later on. put some good tic gudes on it and you will be happy. as swiftwater says a W fitting is ideal, but struble reel seats are a nice option as well.

i have several sages with fugi cheepy guides and i regret it. will be upgrading in the future.

that rod there cost me $320. Got a deal on just about everything from the blank, to components, guides, line check, hook ring, butt cap, reel seat, cork.

My next rod will probably be a lami 10'6 6-10lb.

Should cost about the same, different cork work with a stainless reel seat.

I have a IST1263 built up quite nicely with good components. Cost me $415. It is a sweet stick... My buddy who fishes a sage 3106LB is envious

The custom built rods can be built with sliding reel seats right? And if so does anyone have any good or bad things to say about them, I am in the market for a new CP rod and are having a tough time deciding, sliding reel seats is something I have been thinking about, but I am not sure any help would be great thanks.

All my CP rods are custom made for the very reason I like a short butt. I have the Struble Reels seats that are up locking. From the rear of the reel seat to the butt cap, my butt pieces are 9 cork rings (4 1/2 inches). I find that works well for me.
