how long do you like your butt whoa not that one...
how much cork do you like as a butt on your pin rod ?...from the reel seat back

I've always liked about 5 1/2" cork plus the butt box - total length of 7" from bottom of reel seat to bottom of butt box. Any longer and I find it's always in the way - sticking into my fat gut, etc...  When I was younger I used to only have about 4" total behind the reel seat - that worked great too on small streams with not much wind up required.

I think my current rod has about 4-6" but I think I'd prefer something longer. A longer butt section would allow you to tuck it into your gut or under your arm while battling a fish and therefore reduce the pressure on your wrist. Think of something more like a mooching rod.

No gut to speak of  as I'm a somewhat wiry Redneck.
Extra length comes in quite handy for some of the more difficult places to fish from. Makes long tosses easier IMHO.
And allows the rod to "Double-Duty" as a Spey when required.

my sage was built at searun, 6inches from cork to butt, but another 2 inches from there to where the reel sets in. concrete finishing has done my wrist in so any added support is great.

I have my 2 pins on sliding reel seats so I adjust them at times. Like Iron says, the longer butt is better for casting long. Hey that is a nice buck, Iron. My buddy hit a 17 1/2 lb monster last week at the Vedder.

I have a 9 nich sometimes I wish it was shorter, but like Dion said when fighting fish its nice and long casts are nice with the longer but, maybe its time to go to a slideing reel seat...................

I found that I'm way more comfortable with the sliding seat and the reel up high on the handle. I like the slider because if I happen to mess up my centerpin I can simple spin the seat around and hook up the levelwind that I keep in my vest for a back up.

Too many options with the sliding seat to ignore.

I like my reels a little higher up so I can tuck the butt section into my lower armpit area.
Not sure on the measurement,but definitely higher up than normal.
Makes for real easy casts and the arms don't get as tired after long days of casting because of the little bit of leaverage.
Its one of those personal choice things for each individual.
But I'll have to agree with Nog on this one .

personally prefer the shorter rears ,I build them between 3.5 to six depending on hand size and the reel its being matched to.

I always lean towards rings and will never ever build a rod for myself with plastic fugi cra...er garbage seats again. if its a fixed real seat
then a quality w footing is the absolute bomb for good looks and light weight.
