Vancouver local advice needed!
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:44:51 AM »

Well it's not long until me and the gf will be moving to Van from Perth, Australia. We will be in/around Vancouver for at least 6 months.

Can anyone comment on the fishing in Vancouver itself in spring/summer? Looks like I will be stuck to public transport so preferably somewhere that is accessible via Train/Bus.

Also, if anyone knows of any furnished apartments available in central Vancouver from Mid-may onwards I would appreciate the heads up :)

Cheers in advance and if anyone is ever out Perth(Aus) way I would be glad to share advise or take you for a fish once I'm back in town.

I'm going to assume by Tooey you mean Toohey's beer? Is that available over there? I've had wayyyy too many big nights on that drink haha But what ever it is, consider it done!

You can check for apartments on Craigslist: http://vancouver.craigslist.org/

Right-furnished is very expensive here you might want to consider a shared situation-for a while at least.

I've heard mixed reports on craigslist. I.e a lot of scams. I've found a fair few places such as basement suites and small apts for around 1000p/m. But yeh Im also considering rooms/shares as they are even more affordable.  While it is a working holiday I would ideally like to chill out for a bit when I first get there hence why the cheaper the better :) More time and money for fishing, right?

Hi Shizz - Are you coming over on a one year working Visa? We did and have been here ever since (4 years). My advice would be to look for a cheap furnished sublet / share for a month from your arrival date. This will give you a chance to have a look round the city and decide where you want to live. Don't sign on for a longer tenancy until you've had a look at several places. If you want any advice about neighbourhoods etc you can drop me an email (its in my profile).

Hi Nick.

Yes are coming over on a 2 year working visa. That was sort of our plan, I've heard good things about a few suburbs but like you said its probably best to check out for ourselves. Cheers for the tips and will definitely give you an email if I have any queries.

Considering Vancouver is largely surround by a lot of water, is there any fishing in the sea around town from shore or do you most people head to the lakes?

Cheers
Josh

There can be good Coho fishing from the shore in some spots in Vanouver and also a lot of Salmon opportunities in the Tidal Fraser River, there is a vast array of lakes and rivers within a 10 minutes to a couple of hours drive. You are spoilt for choice really!

Here we go!   ::)

Australians say suburb where Canucks would say neighbourhood.

In Canada a suburb is generally a long way from downtown-or as they say in OZ the CBD. 8)
