Fishing license for kids under 16
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:19:11 AM »

It's that time of the year again - getting new licenses for the entire family.

This year I won't be purchasing salmon stamp (tidal) for my kids and I'm unable to print a license for them.

Have anyone figured a way around this?

Thanks

kids under 16 do not need a license as long as they can prove their age, I am pretty positive about that, anyone else know for sure?

That's only for non-tidal.

Tidal regulation (hard copy) on page 3 states
"Juveniles must obtain a licence, at no charge."

You would be wrong. A free licence for kids is mandatory. Been doing it for years now with my kids. If you want them to be able to retain salmon you will have to pay for a stamp.

When discussion licences for kids under the age of 16, it is important to mention salt or freshwater. For saltwater, kids under the age of 16 require to have one but it is free. For freshwater, kids under the age of 16 do not need a fishing licence.

Freshwater: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/licences/#Younger

Saltwater: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/licence-permis/index-eng.htm#Fees

Bwi Bwi is talking about getting a tidal licence online for his kids. Personally I would get my tidal licence at a retail store instead of online because the system is not reliable. Two years ago I attempted to get one online. The transaction went through but the licence did not show up on the following page. Thinking that the transaction didn't go through, I repeated the purchase and ended up paying twice for no licence before we went to Berry's to get one.

Got an e-mail back from DFO today here's the cut and paste.

We have received your request for support on the National Recreational Licensing System (NRLS). I understand you had experienced difficulty acquiring a licence for your daughter.

We had experienced some technical difficulties regarding juvenile licenses and have since resolved them.  Please feel free to return to our website and complete the process.

Please sign in to NRLS: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/licence-permis/index-eng.htm.
Click on Recreational Fishing Licence System
Enter your daughter's log on details (under Returning Fishers) using your email address or prior licence number (if acquired online)
In the Notification - Active Cart: click on the item in the cart;
Click on Continue;
Click on Finish once you have confirmed your transaction;
Click on the Print button next to the licence you wish to print;
Click on the Print button;
Your system print window will display momentarily, please wait for your browser to respond
Select the printer you wish to use and click "OK"
** If for whatever reason the system print window does not appear, a link in the Printing Instructions will be displayed. Click on the link and a new window will open and prompt you to print your licence. **

For non-tidal, what I'm not clear on is whether kids under 16 can retain say, a Shuswap rainbow or a steelhead, as they have no stamp (can't have a stamp without a license).  I was told at that age that I didn't need any stamps (Shuswap rainbows & lake trout, steelhead, non-tidal salmon etc), but I'm not 100% sure that's true.

Child under the age of 16 and a resident of BC does not need license or stamp.  They are entitled to keep the same quota as those having license and conservation stamp.

Has anyone had any luck with these directions?

I tried again this year but the systenm won't allow a n/c license for a youth under 16. There is no option for a youth license only yearly at over 16 yr old fee. When you choose the fee, you simply get an error message saying to check the birthdate you entered.
