My Dad has (had) an older Minn Kota with the 3 speeds and he also turned it off and on to control the speed.
He's on his third speed control module as they wear out with the constant use (he fishes a lot).

I have a 40lb unit with the Max option - the unit has performed flawlessly and lasts at least 2 days with frequent trolling.

Send me a PM (or email) and I'll let you know of a place to buy a recon'd 40Max for about $299.

Having the rod in your hand definately increases your hookup ratio.

Well if your worried about trolling to fast you could always use a drift sock, or what I used to do with my 9hp motor is attach a milk crate to your boat to slow you down, just a thought.

I have the 50 Maximizer MinnKota from Costco. I've purchased it about a year ago when it was on sale (about $100.00 Off). Its smooth and without clicks, very quiet and powerfull. It don't drain the battery much. Got new battery for it - Nautilus Deep cycle from Canadian Tire at the same time. I wouldn't even consider other brands.. I'm so happy with this one.

I use it on my 12' aluminium about 2x a week and it kicks my friend! I troll with it for about 5 hours, then we use it on my buddies boat sometimes as his batteries are too old. We still get 3 lights (from 4) charge showing. Its a huge reserve I still have after trolling for 4 or 5 hours!  I have not killed this battery yet. Best think I ever got! True, Costco is pricey, but ones you have it, you'll be the happiest silent troller on the lake.. LOL I get there quick with gas and then I go into silent mode with my 50 MinnKota!

What can I say... Canadian Tire have a few smaller ones on sale now, but I stick with the 50 from Costco. Love the Big Prop. That would be my choice over again...
