Capilano - Cable Pool, how to land fish?
« on: May 21, 2010, 07:35:08 PM »

I visited the Capilano salmon hatchery today, and took a look at Cable Pool, etc.   It was as people described, quite dangerous (at least for me).   To me, there seemed to be only one safe footing at Cable Pool, the rest of the rock is slanted dangerously towards the water.

However, I'm REALLY curious.  How do people land fish from the top of Cable Pool and other cliffs?

Do they use strong braid lines, and just haul them up (hand over hand), hoping for the best?

Thanks!   Great video info.

Seems pretty scary to me.   I guess it's only for really experienced fishers.   With my adrenaline pumping, I don't think I'd risk doing that.

Nice fish release, kicking it off the side of the rock face there... what an idiot!

There are a couple spots that you can actually get low enough to the water at cable pool to land a fish but they are a little dangerous to get to.

No reason to fish the cliff imo you will harm the fish and risk your life.

I've fished there more than a couple of times, about the only thing to do is try and pull it up. I've done it, but most will shake off a barbless hook. I watched people thread their way down the stairs to the tail of the pool, but that isn't easy either. There is a few places to climb down there and elsewhere on the river if you're half mountain goat. ;D

Best suggestion is not to fish from the cliffs and find other water level spots to fish

calling that guy an "idiot" is not right
he at least tried to get the fish as faster as possible back to the water
the place is so dangerous.  how else would you do it?
you can't expect "delicacy" in such a place.
I don't think that spot is worth it.  way to dangerous.

In my opinion, if the shoreline prevents a reasonably gentle landing of the fish, and/or a reasonably gentle release if it is wild or the wrong species, then you have no business fishing there.

One more...

I found this one where the fisherman goes around the rock.   It still looks scary to me.

I'm the guy in the video and it really is not that difficult. If you are afraid of heights I would not recommend it, but if you take your time and have seen it done before (like I have from a senior who has been doing it for over 30 years) you'll be fine, but to each there own, cheers WS.
