Chilliwack River, July 11th 2010: Vedder exploring
« on: July 11, 2010, 09:58:13 PM »

Got the itch late in the day today so we headed out to challenge the mighty Vedder river for its treasure.  Arrived at our fishing hole around 2 pm and was disappointed that we could not cross over to the pool we felt surely would hold some red springs.  The river had changed from last year so a scouting mission was in order for the day.  We drove straight up to the hatchery to determine the level these reds are traveling at.  There were 3 red springs in the hatchery so they are spread out throughout the system.  High water level with some fish in the hatchery means tough fishing for the day; not to be discouraged we agree to tackle this fishery as we would steelheading..move a lot and cover lots of ground.  Found some great spots today; 1 brief hook up of a spring... lucky to live another day and saw 2 sockeye jumpers ending a wonderful day out in the valley.

Saw 4 at the hatchery today when I was up around 2 pm....
3 were smaller (5-7 pnds) and pretty red and one clean hog (10 - 15 pnds) was in there as well.

Shouldn't be long now  ;D

10-15 is an average vedder red...anything over 20 is a hog

What number in the hatchery would indicate there are enough in the river for decent fishing? I've never really taken part in this fishery much.

I wouldnt bother even going by hatchery numbers..they are irrelevant, just 4 fish that you have no hope of catching. there could b 100 fish in there right now and I would say its still tough to get them with such high water.

I've fished it 3 times for springs so far, nothing for me but have seen 2 carried out by other fishermen, nothing big 8-10 pounds.
