New rod?
« on: July 13, 2010, 10:36:25 AM »

Hi all, I currently have a Sage 3113 L w/ Cp for steelhead/coho/pinks on the smaller flows.

I am wanting to get a high quality level wind setup for everything else ie. springs on the vedder/fraser.

Suggestions on rod? I am thinking of Calcutta for reel.

Thanks in advance

I'm currently using a gloomis GL2 1265 with a Luna reel....awesome set up.  Hooked some big fish with it last year.  I was going to get the Calcutta but the guys at Berry's pushed me towards the Luna and I love it

Alan, I was wondering which model Luna you had to hold those big fish? Thanks

Well you got a 3113L....if you like Sage then go with the CT 3113M or CT 4110! Hard question to answer because everyone has different views on what they like about various rods.

I thought about the 3113 M as I do love my 3113 L, I wasnt sure if it would be heavy enough but would like to stay with the 3113 line of rods. What would the difference be between the 3113 and the 4110? I would like to stick with Sage as I have never had any issues with them.

Daiwa Luna 300 is smooth when casting and retrieving, but Calcutta TE400 is superb on its drag system.

I'm using the Luna 300, I've had it for about 2 years now and its still like butter.  As long as you maintain your reels regularly you shouldn't have any problems.  I drop mine off at Mikes every year before fishing season starts

Fyrslyer - you are asking a lot out of your next rod!

I would say a 3113MB is a great rod for the vedder, cap, seymour, chehalis, etc and for any species there in...coho, pinks, chum, steelhead, whites, etc.  a 3113mb is more than enough for fraser socks but it could be a little light for fraser springs.  Where its is WAAAAAAAAAAAY too light is casting 4 oz betties!  I have tried and its not pretty!  The rod loads up way deeper than I like (too much stress) it shook and reverberated after the cast...heaving a 4 oz betty just wasn't an application that rod was meant for.

I would recommend the sage 4110 or 4120 if you want to use it on the fraser or a lamiglas GSH 1382MH.  I build rods and I have a beautiful 3113mb if you want it, a used lami 1382 (performs like a sage 4120 but with a softer tip).  I could order a blank and custom build you a rod too.  Email me if you are interested in the 3113mb, the lami, or a new build.

Cheers

I agree with Gooey.Sage 3113MB is too light for Fraser springs.  If money is not an issue I'll buy Sage 4120,Sage 4110 or  GLoomis GL2_1266,Gloomis GL2_1265.
