I'll be up in Merritt over the long weekend camping along the Nicola river. Anyone have any experience fishing up there and could recommend any nearby lakes or rivers. Planning to take along my trout rod and fly rod, was thinking about bring my drift rod along and making a day trip to the Thompson River for some Jacks but Im not sure how long of a drive it is or which part of that river I should target

--Only about 70 km on nicola valley road to spences bridge from merritt. not sure if you are still allowed to fish the area wherethe nicola enters but that used to be a prime spot. I see a native cultural centre has been erected there so would check first. nicola river should be able to fish where you are camping.
--good sports shop in merrit... used to be called powderkeg... in same building now nicola valley sports.. knowledgeable owner just tell him the compleat angler rep sent you.

--ps doesn't really matter where he sends you they're all good... he has some great local tied flies in the shop, and of course some compleat angler river gear.

thanks for the tip. I'll definately stop in when I arrive in town. Spences Bridge is closer than I thought..might be worth making a day out of it, going to have to check up on the regs before I leave

The jack chinook salmon fishing should be reasonably good during the long weekend on the Thompson River, just gotta make sure where the no salmon fishing sections are. You can also try fishing for trout and that is opened throughout the whole system. For fly fishing, nymphing during the day and dry fly fishing in the evening time. For spincasting, I find small spoons really work in slower pools. You'll also get some pikeminnow.

Still debating if I bring up gear for the Thompson, I know I want to make another trip up there mid August sometime for a couple nights

unfortunately from the looks of the regulations the majority of the Thompson is not open to fishing Chinook until August 22nd, The only Section I could see open is a section from the Kamloops Lake inlet downstream to the confluence of the Fraser River, Spences bridge area opens up August 22nd. Looks like I'm leaving the drift rod home this time around. Lakes and flys it is

hmm err or maybe as Im reading it now and looking on a map I'm safe to fish above the mouth of the Nicola river up to Kamloops lake and below the highway 8 bridge in Spences bridge. Confusing reading those regs...Going to need to try and get clarification up there

yes all the red text was making my mind go numb. Definately need to make some markings on a map on closed areas along with some confirmation from the local tackle shop once Im up there

I have always had fun fishing in Nicola Lake which is just outside Merritt.
Its a big lake but i have had a lot of success catching kokanee, rainbows and some big sucker like fish on the fly.
Evening and morning is best. Red flies are a must for the kokanee.
You can also have a lot of success from shore.
Used to fish this lake a lot as a kid. Some big fish in this big lake.
