Well i got up early this morning and thought i would check out a few bars i have never been to. I ended up at two bit, poplar and duncan. I bar fished duncan for a couple hours with nothing to show. I decided to pack up and head somewhere else for a different species, sturgeon. When i got to my next spot i was happy to see no one else there, although it didn't remain that way for long. A couple more people showed up looking for sockeye, but thankfully gave me lost of room to comtinue fishing for sturegon. An hour or so went by with nothing and i was almost ready to go when the bite started. The bite consisted of a few taps followed by nothing... not enough to set the hook i thought. I sat back down to relax and then tap tap tap, a few more small hits. I wait..... and ..... .. nothing.... .. so i sat back down.... well a few minutes later... tap tap tap.. somehting is playing with my bait... at this point im hoping its not some pike minnows. This went on for about 45 mins until finally it took the bait, i set the hook and had a fish on. The fish didn't seem too big, maybe 3-4 feet. The line began to rise and i awaited the leap of the prehistoric looking fish. Well, it turned out to be bigger than 3-4 feet as it exploded out of the water followed by an attempt to drag me to the ocean as it peeled line down stream. After its initial hard run it seemed to be coming it quite easily. I worked the fish in thinking, well this is a bit of a disappointment. And then the battle began.... As the fish got closer it changed its mind and decided it wanted to go in the other direction. Well there was little i could do to stop it and my line peeled off my reel at a thumb burning rate. This cat and mouse game continued for a number of hard runs, coming up near the surface a few times and then saying good bye ... .. finally after a long hard battle and some very tired arms the sturgeon gave in and allowed me to get a look at him and unhook him. The fish ended up being 76", a new record for me and my first fish bigger than me (only by 2" though).
A good day out, despite the rain.
