Non-tidal Fraser River (Lillooet), August 22nd 2010
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:49:12 PM »

Checked out the Fraser south of Lillooet on Sunday. I was not too sure about the Sockeye up there. I talked to DFO who had been checking the scene just south of Lillooet. He claimed the fishing was really good so I gave it a try.
At the most 30 people fishing that spot. I saw lots of fish landed and it was less than 15 minutes before I hooked the first one. I had my quota within one hour in the afternoon. I had never fished for sockeye before. It was different. I read about bottom bouncing in this forum. I am not getting into any debate about fishing ethics. I used a leader of less than 2 feet and hooked all fish where they should be hooked. Did they go for my bait? Who knows....
I prefer to fly-fish along the Cayoosh... it is more exciting although I never really keep any of the trout...
What are the expert opinions on fly-fishing for sockeye? Does that at all make sense on a big river like the Fraser? I thought it might be interesting as all fish that I hooked were really close to shore.

You will want to use a lead shooting head to get your fly down. Most chartreues patterns work as do others tied with UV material. if these fish do not hit flies why does the catch ratio decline greatly when not using the above colors?

Try the Thompson with UV green, chartreues, or orange.

yes mostly silver, the fish are hardly colored, at least not the ones that I saw. I was surprised myself.
I used a orange/ pink hoochie that I cut back a little because it was too big.
Thanks for the color advice, I might try the fly next time I am up there....

Just got back from Whistler and did two days on the Fraser in Lillooet as well while passing through. Fish are in really good shape but MUCH smaller on average than in the Hope area I found. No Adams run up there........Limits in under an hour both days.
