Went to a bar in Richmond to kill some time while waiting for the wife.  I had 1 1/2 hours to play so i decided to throw in a jig looking for some pikeminnows.

I ended up catching no pikeminnows but 3 jack springs    Totally unexpected!

There were lots of fish jumping in the middle of the river but i was just fishing the flats 20' out in maybe 4'-5' of water.  The water is also very clear which helps.

Very nice. I guess jig is the ticket. I've only caught two jack springs in total all these years down here, while targeting other salmon species on spoons. One in early September for pink salmon, one in early October for coho salmon.

I've seen lots of smaller fish jumping lately, possibly cutthroat trout and jacks. Unfortunately only one brief take late last week.

No idea red or whites.  Very strong and lively for there size though!

I did catch jack springs in the cap last fall on the same jigs.

Water was very clear yesterday as well and i think that's helps a lot with jigs or any artificial lure.

Will try to get out a bit before work today and bring a camera.

So just the rubber grub like last year? What colour(s)? I have a whole bunch of dart coloured ones in the box but have not tried them yet.

Mr. Twister seem to be the most durable "3 inch meeny" , however the "Compac" brand from Army/Navy comes in brighter colors (chartreuse, pink etc...) which seem to work better.  Also 3 inches.

Most of the luck I've had with jigs on the Fraser and other rivers is hopping it on or near the bottom.

No salmon today just a big and frisky pikeminnow, the original intention of fishing yesterday.

I will have to wait till the weekend to try again

Would the incoming tide be the best bet?

any pictures of the jig set up? or how you set the rig up for success?  i have been meaning to try jig fishing for sometime and would like to try something that does not stain my hands of roe all the time in my pusuite for salmon!

I will post a pic tomorrow, it is very simple, cheap, and yes clean.

In the spot i was fishing high tide or just before or after is required.  When the water is low I am casting into the mainflow of the river where it drops off and not the sandy sloping bar. 

Other spots might be ok at low tide as long as fish are there or passing through.

These are what I use.   I really haven't had enough time or experience to say what colors are best but the bright one on the left worked last year as well.  I will try the black ones on streams that have clear water.

Note these are the jigs with crappy hooks but they are suitable for fish under 8 lbs or so and they are cheap.  Bigger fish will bend these hooks and they also need to be sharpened on occasion if you don't want to miss strikes.

Here is the big pikeminnow that fought pretty close to or as well as a similar sized salmon would.

That is so cool! I tell you. It amazes me how stubborn we get with our methods and our locations. If it worked once, we go back to it time and time again. Then someone tries something like jigs and caches spring jacks. Ha. That is so cool! I know I said that already.
