Buying fresh roe
« on: September 13, 2010, 04:22:19 PM »

So my question is how much do you guys spend on fresh roe off of a fishmonger? I've never bought fresh roe before (usually buy already cured or cure the small amounts from the fish I catch) and was curious what the average price per pound or kilo....it's about the time of year chum roe will start coming available.

$4-$8 per pound.  Sockeye roe you can get for like $1 a pound.
Once you get over $8 a pound you might as well spend the extra coulple bucks and buy it cured already.

the more you buy the cheaper it gets, go in on it with a few buddies if you can. Unless you are a fishing loaner like me who has no friends  :P

I am a fishing loner lol, my friends can't grasp that fishing is a fun time. I just started curing 2 pounds of chum roe today. Hope to go fishing the vedder early Thursday morning. Try my luck on a few runs and see what happens.

If you are in or around Richmond call Rob at 604 233 0484, the more you buy the cheaper it gets. He sells cured and uncured.

I've seen a couple guys at peg leave with freezer bags of full of roe. They were walking the banks asking for roe and offering to clean your fish to get it.  Most people were more than willing to give it up.

Isn't it illegal to possess more than a large ziplock bag of roe without the dressed fish present as well other than if purchased?  Chance you take I guess if you mooch on the fraser bars

It is definitely illegal to possess roe without the dressed fish. A friend of mine was ticketed on the Stave last season by DFO for having 2 skeins of chum roe but no fish.  Mind you the Stave is heavily DFO policed. Its too bad the Vedder doesn't have the same DFO/CO presence as many on this forum have reported witnessing infractions there. DFO would generate as much ticket revenue here as on the Stave.

It is not illegal to possess roe without the dressed fish, unless you are over the legal amount.

Roe... you must not have more than 1 kg of roe (fish eggs) in your possession for use as bait unless the roe was obtained from a commercial source that lawfully obtained that roe, or you have in your possession the freshly dressed fish from which the roe in excess of 1 kg was taken. Carry a receipt with you if you purchased roe from a commercial source.
