Sturgeon eating bait in mesh bag???
« on: September 17, 2010, 06:13:20 PM »

Always wondered if any damage is done to a sturgeon when it swallows the bait that is wrapped in mess, old ladies nylons ect..
Not very often when you hook a Sturgeon do they actually get the bait but it does happen.  Also when the roe has milked out and thrown into the river, guessing some will be eaten by the Sturgeon..
Do you think this would cause any harm to a Sturgeon????

Iv never had one swallow it deep, If thats what your getting at. They tend to play with it quite a bit, giving enough time to set the hook. The sturgeon Iv lip hooked, have all had the bag break open, and the empty bag is always still attached to the hook. I believe sturgeon have a sensative mouth, and would just split the bag out.

I have a friend that uses nylons hes never had a problem with them taking them to deep.  My personal experience with sturgeon has been most fish are hooked in the lip.

if you have sturgeon fished enough you will eventually hook one deep. on a pink year i had a 5 footer practically ingest my hook. i got it out and it wasnt even bleeding, they are pretty tough. I dont think mesh is an issue, most people use mesh or nylon and the amount of previously tagged sturgeon and fish with holes in there mouth we have got over the years suggest they are fine

If a fish were to swallow a bag without a hook attached I think it's stomache acids would digest the roe, and the bag would pass through the fish.
