my thoughts on jigs for chum

I've got a bunch of hooks on order hopefully arriving this week  so i can start tying up some jigs...

couple questions for you Banny...

I got weighted jig heads (1/4"), they are nice as they provide some good weight to the jig however the hole in them doesn't really accept my pins very well, i have to double them up, so where do you find your beads or pins from? I was thinking about maybe getting those sewing pins that have the plastic bob on the end to put as an added feature to hold a jig bead head on.

Mine are tied on bent rods jigs do it yourself packs.  Little expensive but the components included are top notch.

Basically I do have enough supply to tie up 200 jigs, cost of about 30-40 dollars depending how fancy to get with the materials for the body. Sure beats 3.50 a pop,  , maybe i'll open a stand on the side of the river  :-

the pins i have will work fine in the bent rod beads, just normal sewing finding pins that you can get at walmart for like 2 bucks.

A few weeks ago I posted a link to a site where you can buy the same beads that are sold with the bent rods jigs.  It was on a thread related to purchasing bulk hooks for jigs.  Just run a search for my old posts.

You will want a pin with an all metal head and a heavy gauge, you do not want it to be able to bend if only the head of the jig hooks between rocks.  You also don't want any type of pin where damage can allow the bead to fall off.

Hope the hooks you purchased are a heavy enough gauge, I am interested what type they are.

I switched to using soft plastics instead.  I use walleye jigs.

Didn't notice a difference in effectiveness.  Cheap and easy.

Same ones that bent rods has, Matzuo sickle hooks in 1/0 and size 1,  although i think they use 60 degree bend where as mine are 90 degree i just noticed that, shouldn't make much of a difference as they are quite similar .

i think cigar box nails will also be an effective pin as well if you can find them in 1 1/2" length as they have a large head on them, like a mini roofing nail

Are they the heavy gauge hooks like the bent rods jigs?  Where did you find a supplier? The 90 degree makes no difference with the pin and bead style setup.

I ordered them off Ebay from a fishing supply whole saler, from what I could find Matzuo only makes the sickle hooks in one gauge, so it SHOULD be exactly the same, but I do not know for sure as I don't have them in my hands yet

Shoot, hate to say it but you are likely in for a disappointment. 

The Matzuo sickle jig hooks available on the market are a thin gauge wire.  The ones used for bent rod jigs were a not a normal catalog item and I doubt they were available on Ebay.  Last Fall I spoke with a distributor of Matzuo products in the states and he could not get the heavy gauge hooks for me.

Roger that. Chartruse colored jigs.  Or Chartruse and pink.  don't forget to tip the hook with a fresh prawn. Gives a tasty smell to it.   I also like the jigs from Bent Rods.  True they are more expensive but they take a beating and last longer - Much more so than the jigs I bought at GI Joe's in the States as they went out of business. It is so exhilirating watching your float go down and then Fish On!!!
