hey guys i was down at the vedder this weekend and couldnt help but notice how low the hooked to landed ratio was. what are the main reasons they get off the hook? hook size? or is it people trying to just reel the fish straight in?? got(and released) my first chum this weekend but couldnt land a spring! any advice greatly appreciated.

both i began with roe and once i ran out swithced to wool, but there were some ppl hooking into fish after fish but rarely landing

Sometimes people get alot of foul hooked springs that are then tough to land. Also some people fish too light for the fish size, water speed of the run. I saw a pair of fly guys hooking spring after spring in fast water - no way they were landing any of them. Some fast water areas its easy to hook springs, but the chances of landing are low for anyone - so better not to fish there.

If its not a matter of being underpowered for a big fish, then there's lots of other things that affect the landing ratio.

Sometime's it's just the breaks you get, I lost a few this AM, some spat the hook, some took the hook with them, who knows maybe your leader catches a burr or something stupid and the fish is gone. I was into a nice coho for a few mins had her in close enough to tell she was a hatchery but beacuse i took my time, she took off again into the faster current did a double axle and snap went my line.

Any fish hooked legit in the mouth is fairly easy to lande, of course faster water can make that difficult however it's not a huge issue unless your using a trout rod for chinook.

Lots of factors: perhaps you're undergunned for the species you're targetng, not tiring out your fish prior to landing.
