ATTENTION ANGLERSBC HYDRO, as required by their Water License on the Cheakamus River are monitoring annual population levels of
chum salmon in the Cheakamus River.
As part of this study, fisheries technicians will be capturing chum adults and applying transmitters and a brightly coloured “disc” (attached below the dorsal fin) to a number of chum adults each year from early October through November. Two types of transmitters will be utilized:
1) PIT TAGS: This transmitter is applied in to muscle tissue just below the dorsal fin. When cleaning any fish retained for consumption please remove this tag from the flesh. All fish tagged with “disc tags” will have one of these transmitters.
2) RADIO TAGS: This transmitter is inserted through the mouth and into the stomach. Only 1 of every 10 fish with a disc tag will also have a radio tag. Radio tagged fish will have a thin plastic-coated wire antenna that hangs out of the mouth and can be mistaken for fishing line.
PLEASE DO NOT PULL ON THIS WIRE OR REMOVE THE TAG. Following tagging these chum are tracked throughout the river to identify spawning areas and run-timing. This is done with hand held and stationary receivers at various sites along the mainstem and side channels of the Cheakamus River. Electronic enumeration of chum adults into side channels (BC Rail, Tenderfoot, NVOS channels and Moody’s) in conjunction with tagged fish distribution will allow for the development of an annual chum adult escapement estimate to the Cheakamus River.
Anglers are requested to:
- Report capture of tagged fish to InStream Fisheries Research Inc.
- Release tagged chum adults with a minimum amount of stress.
- Report tags found or in dead fish to InStream Fisheries Research Inc.
- Return Radio transmitters to Tenderfoot Hatchery (Midnight Way) or contact InStream Fisheries Research Inc for mailing address.
