So I'm not advocating you go out and wack a bunch of salmon for your animal, but I thought I'd share this.

I owned a dog for all my life until she died of old age, unfortunately this was the spring of 2010.

We used to cook up what we couldn't eat (not including the bones, and wasn't much) for her and she would eat them up right away. Keep in mind she was no starving dog and was fed the best dog food all her life without table scraps. It seemed like her black coat would glisten glossy black after she eat salmon, perhaps due to the numerous oils in the fish.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has thought about this regarding their pet. My old dog was a Labrador/Sheppard/Chesapeake and she would devour any leftover salmon.  

Would it be frowned upon to get rid of salmon this way?. I usually never keep more than my family needs, but when small portions of leftover salmon laid in the refrigerator, it was the best method.

I scrape up the leftover meat from my filleting job, cook it and give it to my dog. She loves it.

No experience with dogs and cooked salmon, so can't comment.

  Interesting link Matt. I have a siberian husky and take him fishing all the time. He won't eat a raw fish, unless it is frozen. Lost a few walleye last winter ice fishing. He smelled them and played with them a bit and then he waited an hour or so till they were frozen then take one to shore and eat it. We didn't notice till two were gone and he had a grin on his face like a butchers dog.

My Snowshoe Siamese cat goes nuts when I bring a fish home to fillet.  The minute I hit the stairs up from the garage she is on me for some sushi.  I usually give her her lunch meal in small pieces of salmon in her bowl.  I am lucky that she does not realize that there are days I come home with out any salmon or I would be in serious trouble.

I've been doing this fora few years now.

I fillet my fish, then put the remains in the oven (skeleton, belly flaps and all) and cook it up. I then scrap the majority of the meat off into small tupperware containers and freeze them for my dog. I take one out of the freezer and give a portion with his own dog food. He's devours his food immediately and can't get enough! I had to vacuum seal about a dozen packages of the scraps because I've brought home so many sockeye and coho this year. I do this to all my fish including trout and I even get one of my buddies to hand over his fish skeletons to me.

Sure it's work, but throw on some tunes and pour yourself a nice cold drink and the time goes by quick when you're scraping off the skeleton. My dog loves it and it's great for him.

You'd be amazed at how much meat is left after filleting a fish

Well I can vouch that raw trout seems to have no apparent ill effect on dogs. This summer my son was showing his mother a small trout that he had caught and the dog jumped up, took the fish so that olly the tail was sticking out of its mouth, and then swallowed in whole.

I have 3 american pitbull terriers (UKC registered show dogs) They love bellyfat from salmon.LOL my female tried to eat the head..But ive never actually cooked the remains for them.maybee next time im lucky enough to go fish and actually catch a hatch fish.

years ago my vet recommended salmon oil supplements for my dog.  So guess what?  They get salmon all the time.  Table scraps, or filleting scraps, fish stock, etc.

Nothing goes to waste around here.  lol.

the top mink ranchers use fish in the food to make the fur glossy.should do the same for dogs.

i cook up the off cuts w/ skin (really well done) and feed it to my two dogs (bullmastiffs), so there is never very much leftover past the first day hahah

My cats luv pinks. Upgrading to sockeye and Coho this year. Usually cook them just in case.

Does anyone feed their cats raw salmon?
Wonder if raw or cooked is better?

Pancreatitis.  Took my dog fishing and he fell ill.  Could barely walk, groaning a lot, wouldn't eat, diarrhoea.  Took him to the vet.  Blood work says pancreatitis.  I asked if I could feen him some rice and fish.  She said white fish was fine, but salmon is high in fat which can bring on the irritation of the pancreas.  I won't feed it to him anymore.  He sure loves it though.  Thought he was ready to die.  I'd rather stick to less fatty stuff from now on.  Chicken's good.  But I can't catch a chicken with a gooey bob and a piece of wool.

There is always danger of ingesting parasites when eating raw fish. Nobody should really eat fresh raw fish.
First you have to freeze it on -17 I think for a week to kill any "organisms" in the meat.
Fish for sushi is always frozen.
If you eat fresh raw fish you run the risk of serious disease.

RAW.  It is an EXCELLENT source of protein (especially compared to commerical food)

Cats are CARNIVORES.  The more meat in their diet, the better.
