Chilliwack River has been closed for chum salmon retention since October 15th.

Fraser River closes for chum salmon retention tomorrow.

Albion test catches continue to drop and the in-season run size estimate is now at 769k. Currently Stave, Nicomen Slough and Harrison River are opened for chum salmon retention. If run size estimate remains below 800k tomorrow, which is pretty likely, these tributaries will also close for chum salmon retention starting on Monday October 25th.

Chehalis River typically opens for chum salmon retention on November 1st. If run size estimate remains below 800k, it will remain closed for chum salmon retention.

These management measures are decided by 2010's salmon IFMP.

That's too bad the numbers are so low. First the Sockeye, then the Chum, can we expect Coho Next Year and the Springs the Year after?

Well thats a load of crap. Let's compare numbers to last couple years Albion test fishery.
For the last 30 days.
Chinook Test Fishery 2008- 2754 Chum
Chinook Test Fishery 2009- 2202 Chum
Chinook Test Fishery 2010- 2467 Chum
Numbers are up from last year where retention remained open.

Chum Test Fishery 2008- 4743 Chum
Chum Test Fishery 2009- 5122 Chum
Chum Test Fishery 2010- 5018 Chum

I was on the stave yesterday and couldnt keep them off in the lower end fishing bait and spoons. Big push of fresh ones move in just as they close it which I cant see the justification why. Conservation Officers are going to be busy on these systems tomorrow because it sounds like hardly anybody has heard of this closure out there today.

If you read the regulations it says no fishing for chum on some rivers. Some you can but keep 0.

I'm pretty sure that means no C&R for the vedder.

But if you hook multiple chum and the officer feels you are fishing water holding chum he may write a ticket. There are many spots on the vedder that hold many more chum than other fish, but as well might hold coho at times.

It may be wise to avoid waters with lots of chum as the vedder seems to be specially regarded as it is the only one I know of that has no chum fishing stated and they very well might enforce that rule in areas.

Well its pretty obvious thats not going to happen a)no officer is going to stay there to watch one fisherman in specific b) the river is still open for Chinook and Coho retention and you can catch chums in the mix on any part of the river and c)You cant change up your baits to try and avoid catching chums because they will take everything that the open species will take.

Do you have an inside tip that we don't? They stated in the fishery notice it is closed for retention until the end of the year, they arent going to make a special regulation to close areas of the Vedder to avoid chums because like I said above you can catch chums in any water on the river. It;s just common sense.

May I know why chum retention is such a hot topic? They tase like my friend, even fresh. I'd take a Coho any day over a chum thats starting too rot in the ocean, before it makes it way upstream.
