Coil Lead for Fishing prices.

I'm paying $6 plus hst at crappy tire for a 1 pound coil.

I used to pay a few bucks just a few years ago.

What do you pay?

I think it was just under $3 at berrys a couple of years ago but now that the prices of lead has gone sky high, its pricey everywhere.

I bought one earlier this year for $5 at Wally World (i think) I usually take a couple years to go through a roll. Probably be even longer now that i hardly gear fish anymore  


These used to be like $3 but when the price of lead went up these almost doubled in price a year or so ago. Go and buy some of the big rectangle 16-20 ounce weights for bar fishing, they are like $10 EACH !!

I haven't bought any pencil lead for over 5 years. I pour my own pencil lead from lead found on the river banks.

I'll hold you to that. Remind to give you some next time. Unlike the pencil lead you buy from stores, mine is nice and silvery (none of that impurities)

Over the years I've pulled out about 100 pounds of pencil lead from the white water just below the Dog Leg at the Cap. Low water during the summer is the best time to get them.

I save all my split shot and various lead, I have a melting pot buried in the garage...need to put it to use.
I rarely use pencil lead, Altho I probably should for those fast runs where split shot just doesn't get it down fast enough

Pour my own split shots. Do-it molds are about 50 bucks. One time cost of stove, pot, ... used for pencil, betties, banana.

Lead is only a small portion of the total price, used to be Scrap lead was 35c/pound several years ago when pencil lead was $3. Even if lead is a buck a pound pencil lead should only increase by 70c.

Fish Assassin could you share a little more about your mold, how it was made, what it was made out etc. I would like to make or buy a mold but not sure where to start. Any info would be helpful, I use the roll lead, but hate spending the money on it when I have access to lead. Thanks

I know berrys sells lead moulds

berries has a mold to make pencil lead for about $70 as I recall.  That pencil lead is not hollow core though so you need to use surigcal tubing or pound a flat tab in the end and punch a hole in it.  Actually, it may have a small brss eye in it?

I have a ton of different molds, a hot pot, etc.  If someone wants to get an order together,  it may be worth my time to buy the mold and cast a bunch up on pencil lead...let me know if anyone is interested.  I could do $3/lb  so I would need a 10lb-20lb order to justify it.

I'm paying $5.95 at Army and Navy for 1lb.  Sure would like to pour my own though!
