not much to look for on the cp reel.
check the center fixing screw to make sure it's not stripped or damaged. It's a low torque screw and can be damaged by overtightening on some models.
check the bearings for wobble, you can feel worn/damaged bearings when you spin up the reel
look for obvious signs of damage (scratches, corrosion, dings in the reel palming edge)
check the clicker to see that it works and can be turned on and off
spin it up and grin like a fool.
if the retrieve is the wrong hand, you can re-spool them, but it may be worth your while to do it at a shop where they have a line winder. Otherwise tie an end off to a tree and take it for a LONG walk, stacking the line up on the ground as you go. Consider re-rigging your mainline in the opposite direction to even out the wear etc if you're respooling.
