Cheakamus Late November
« on: November 27, 2010, 08:43:35 AM »

I'm heading up there fly fishing.

My thoughts are to use some flesh flies and egg patterns to target the trout and dollies.

I'm not familiar with this river, does any one have any suggestions for flies to tie?  (pictures are easiest)

Thanks!

Egg Patterns will be the most successful.  Look for the chums ;) They hang around there.

Fish egg and flesh patterns below the chums for bulls.  The Squamish probably has more dollies, but in smaller sizes generally.

Like other have said, both flesh and egg patterns are what you need to be carrying. Eggs will most likely work better right now while flesh works better later on this year. I'm a novice fly tier, so in the past I have just tied up a piece of rabbit strip in white or chartreuse with some marabou feathers in the same colours. They have worked a few times. :) Trout beads are worth bringing too. My companions have done well with them by fishing under the indicator. I've only used them with a spinning setup under a float, which has also been productive.

I'm not going to even bother with your comment.

Dolly's feed around chums as they are laying their eggs,  if you see the chums there are sure to be Dolly's around.

thanks Rod, I actually spent all saturday tying flies and my friend canceled.  :p

i'll take a picture of what i came up with.

@Steel_Mo_Head:  sorry I didn't catch what you meant.  good idea.  i know where there are/where some chums closer to home.  might have to go check it out this weekend since it is much safer than venturing to the cheakamus alone.

I would try and make a trip to the chek.  it's been amazing for me.  Egg patterns more of the pinkish colour.

Heading up for some skiing/boarding?  Lucky you.  I'll be tying more flies since I just gave away all the ones I wanted to try :P

If you happen to get back at a decent hour, any update on the water level/clarity would be wonderful!
