Was out on saturday to do a little scouting...the river was in prime condition with lots of chum still kicking, but just barely.... drifted a likely looking spot with a jensen egg and white wool, first drift ..nothing..second drift ..I noticed my float bobbed slightly...I ignored it and then about a foot furthur  it bobbed slightly again.. so I hit it half-heartedly..Hey!! there's something there and it feels like it's got some weight, no sooner had that thought gone thru my head when the fish suddenly took off into the current straight for the opposite bank...it pulled and pulled hard in mid-stream then suddenly jumped into the bright sunshine. My jaw dropped as I realized that it was a chrome bright steelie which proceeded to snap my 6 lb leader like a dry twig when it re-entered the water. I wish I could say that I had it to hand but sadly it was not to be....but....it was my first this year and bodes well for the season ahead. I did manage a small dollie later that afternoon. Once again, I had the whole river section to myself...I love fishing without the crowds.

It is a nice looking river but has been obliterated over the years. It's very much like fishing a Squamish type river, there are fish but the numbers don't compare to rivers like the vedder, chehalis, etc.

Thank you for giving out the location. It's nice of you to share. No I do not think I will ever fish out there. In fact I fish very little. I am more the arm chair kind of fisher, but I enjoy a day out in the river, even if I catch nothing. Thanks again.

Hope you paid attention to the regs. A major section of the north fork is closed to fishing to protect the steelhead heading to the Kendel hatchery.
The river doesn't have many fish left. Two tribes net it. Not much gets up the river.

Sept. 1967 Nr Marietta, Nooksack River, WA Harold James Smelled strong animal smell and saw Bigfoot sitting by river at dawn.

Closure of the North Fork Nooksack River to fishing

Action: Part of the North Fork Nooksack River will be closed to fishing.


Effective dates: Dec. 1, 2010 until further notice.


Species affected: All gamefish.


Location: The North Fork Nooksack River from the Mosquito Lake Road Bridge upstream to the yellow post located at the upstream most corner of the hatchery grounds, approximately 1,000 feet upstream of the mouth of Kendall Creek.


Reasons for action: The Kendall Creek Hatchery and Whatcom Creek Hatchery programs in recent years have had difficulty securing sufficient eggs from returning hatchery winter steelhead to meet basin production goals. Closure of the fishery, similar to last year, is needed to collect sufficient fish to meet egg-take needs.


Other information: When the combined broodstock needs of Kendall Creek Hatchery, and Whatcom Creek Hatchery are met, the fishery will revert to seasons as listed in the Sportfishing Rules 2010/2011 pamphlet edition, FISHING IN WASHINGTON.

Which part of part is not understandable in the notice? Are you certain that the OP was not fishing downstream from the Mosquito Lake Road Bridge? Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't, but there is no need for the following comment based on a presumption.

Steelie1030, were you aware that the river had an emergency closure between these boundaries? Where were you fishing it?
