So I'm off to the Riviera Maya right after Christmas for my cousins wedding.  We are going deep sea fishing on the 28th and i have never been there before so i don't know what to expect.  I've looked at the fishing calender for mexico and what is active when we are there, but i was wondering if anyone has fished there before and could tell me what to expect.  We are going out with Cozumel Charters, should we expect a lot of action?

Well if you're on a charter don't expect to do any fishing you'll just be sitting there waiting for a some kid to hand you a rod with a fish attached.

Take hat/sunscreen, etc., etc., etc.

are you on a private boat or a boat with like 10 other people?

there is 16 of us going fishing in 2 boats with 8 guys on each boat, at least half of the guys are just going for the sake of going, most of them will just want to be drunk on the boat so my odds of getting a rod with a fish is good. they guides say they will have 5 lines in the water so the odds are good if anything is biting.

i chartered a boat in the mayan riviera last xmas with a buddy,trolled around for an hour with no luck then we asked to go jigging on the reef which was great fun,lots of fish then we trolled for a couple more hrs close to shore and got a double header barracuda both were around 25lbs,all in all we had a great day,take lots of beer!! and good luck.

Yep-- nothing quite like a bunch of drunken fools spoiling the trip for those that want to fish. But no worries, the Mexican boat skippers like the drunks-- They tip better because they cant figure out how much they are tipping!!!

Forget the deep sea fishing.....sitting on your butt drinking...get them to take to you to the flats at the north end of Cozumel and flyfish for bones and small tarpon or if you can't toss a fly use spinning gear. Having said that....I have also had some awesome days catching Tuna and Dorado while out deep sea fishing..and they don't go very far from shore but that was three avid fishers in a boat who don't drink much. You can still have a blast. You may want to consider packing some anti-nausea gear.

We stayed pretty close in shore on a short 5 hour charter the last time down there.  Pretty much out of Cancun itself.  Caught more Barracuda that we wanted.  It took longer to catch the bait fish.  It was pretty fun.  We were on about a 20 foot panga (with full bimini) with a 100hp newer Yammy.  Every time we tossed out the bait fish, barracuda would start following, following following and WHAMMO, there would be 3,4,5 cuda's following the bait fish, just 20 yards off the back of the panga.  The little bait fish would start going balistic, then we could tell we were about to get a hit.

It was a good time, me and three friends, each paid $75.  Two guys never fished before, two of us are well seasoned.  Fun watching the non fishers try to reel these things in.

Too bad the gear was so heavy, would have loved to have had a spinning set up with me.  The guide had old Penn reels spooled with very heavy line, and short tuna stick, took some of the sport out of it. 

When we tired of fishing, we got the guide to bring to a wreck and we snorkled around there a bit, no crowds, water to ourselves.  Barracuda in a chain 10 wide/deep as far as the eye could see.  Pretty cool to be swimming right along side such a huge school of Cudas.  You could get right up to them.

I got a sail fish and a bonita when I did that in the riviera maya. I believe we went in late february a few years back. Its was a great experience to fight the sail fish. but trolling can get boring if the bite is not on. Many people go without catching anything so chose your guide carefully. I prefer to go fly fish or spin cast for inshore fish like Tarpon, beracuda, jacks, snook and my favorite ROOSTER FISH! I dont believe rooster are found in that region tho. If you get a sail fish be ready for a battle that will last a long time and you may not be able to use your arms the next day. HAHA! Have fun and good luck.Be prepared for a little sea sickness too. Alcohol or being hung over does not help either. I dont get motion sick at all but I was hung over and I almost did get sick.

So, just got back from the trip and fishing was great.  we started rolling and hooked a barracuda, but that was our only fish in the first 2 hours.  i asked our guides if they could take us to a reef so we could bottom fish and they brought out their lighter rods and then the fun began.  Everyone on the boat got to cast out fish and everyone caught at least 2 fish on their own.  i caught a nice green trigger fish that i posted in fish porn.  we also hooked and fought a 30lb grouper into the boat.  sadly i didnt get the rod for that fish.  all in all it was a great trip, we had two boat, our boat caught the fish and the other boat puked over the edge of theirs!
