Chilliwack River, January 9th 2011
« on: January 09, 2011, 09:59:24 PM »

On the river by first light, starting up top, lining up with the other bears on the river bank.
No love after a few hours short floating jigs, and roe with wool. Decided to head down river to Lickman
after a quick Timmies visit...Mmmmcofffeeee.
Got to Lickman around noon, 20 minutes of floating row bags and wool, and my float went down in some ripple on the upsteam side of a gravel bar.
It took a run or two, but I held it in place, while I walked down the river reeling in at the same time, holding it, so I could get it in some slack water for a proper ID, and some clown in front of me on the bank decides to stay in place just watching me while I move to get out along side of the fish (its in front and a couple feet down stream of him)
The fish is in a slot on the other side of a bar which ends about 3 or feet past him, with another slot that runs along the shore. I want to get the fish past the bar, and pull it around the end so I don't pull it across the gravel. The guy doesn't move, the fish runs into the bar, does a head shake, and pops the hook, craaaap!!!!
He looks up to me and says "You should have just just horsed it in over the bar and onto the shore."  >:( >:( >:(
I just didn't didn't know what to say to him, I was literaly at a complete loss for words. First fish of the season on, and lost because i couldn't get around this guy quick enough to guide the fish in properly. What the heck is wrong with some of these guys? Yeah, that's a great idea, yank a possible wild across the rocks, and up on the shore, injuring its self flopping around on the rocks. Disappointing for sure, not landing the fish, and running into someone so clueless I didn't think it was possible. Sorry for venting, but if someone is bringing a fish in, don't stand in the way like a light post.
But on the bright side, it was a fantastic day out, sunny, crisp, and the river had a couple feet of visibility.
NEXT TIME!!!!

I cannot speak for your skills but if the guy your referring to was native then I know who your talking about because I already heard his side this afternoon..... according to him he was fishing a spot when a guy way above him hooked a fish and walked it down way to far when the fish was not even fighting (this is his story not mine). personally I like to walk my fish down as well and stay even with them(makes the fight go quicker). if your concerns were sincerely for the fish then kudos to you. this guy happens to be a quality rod and i couldn't see him being as ignorant as u have stated. i have seen some serious overplaying of small fish over the years and when somebody runs down small fish(usually from lack of experience) and spooks the water all up it can be frustrating. common courtesy is to step out of the way while others are fighting fish (this guy has been fishing for over 40 years and knows etiquette ). according to him u don't know how to fight a fish and panicked when u got close to him...rushing the land and blaming your loss on him. I was not there so I cannot side with either of u but all I can say is there is 2 sides to every story. maybe you should have gave him an etiquette lesson if he really didn't know his river manners, instead of walking away and letting it happen to somebody else. your story just makes me laugh because saying nothing doesn't help the problems on the river these days and going on the internet screaming bloody murder when the guy cant defend himself isn't going to change what happened.  its just a fish tho and hopefully you will land one soon :)

Have you considered asking the guy to move so you can pass ? Maybe the guy is a newbie and doesn't know what to do ? Just a thought.

i call it common sense...regardless of what the guy thought, the person playing the fish should always be given a pathway to walk a fish down (as long as he announces his intention to other anglers fishing below him)...he's the one fighting the fish so it should be at his discretion whether or not to let it run.
i too, have lost my fair share of fish because of inconsiderate fishermen.

No... that's what you get for offering a fishing report on this forum...ego from the peanut gallery.
If you guys had a shred of maturity you'd send guys like BCguy a private message instead of leaping at an opportunity to undermine his fishing skills or mock him for only being able to fish on weekends.
Plenty of the guys I've met on the river that boasted of how long they'd fished the river were the biggest dinks of them all.

I read this section for the fishing reports and the stories told, not the bitchin and criticising of other anglers, we all screw up from time to time, and I have made mistakes out there myself. But in my many years of fishing and guiding I have never heard so much crap and jealousy of other anglers as I have in the last couple of years. Come on guys lets enjoy what we have and promote good will out there.
I fished the mid river this morning and thoroughly enjoyed myself, even though i didn't hook anything, met a nice young man fishing the same section of river, had a quick chat wished each other well and continued on our way. Unfortunately the  old hands don't take the cold as they once did, so it was off home for hot coffee, and another day tomorrow.

If everyone retained such an arrogant attitude then how are we supposed to recruit the next generation of fishermen?

Not everyone is born with 10+ years fishing experience, the sooner that all the "high and mighty holier than thou"s on this forum understand that, the better for the sport as a whole.

So am I the next generation... but I feel intimidated whenever I am out in case I make some trivial mistake that some narrow minded idiot decides to publicly humiliate me for. I thought fishing was supposed to be enjoyable - well at least in every other part of the world Ive done it anway  ;D
