How to rig a shrimp for steelhead fishing?
« on: January 13, 2011, 06:28:10 PM »

I have been using whole peeled frozen shrimp coloured pink with procure for steelhead fishing.
I use an octopus hook with an egg loop to hook and hold the shrimp, but have not found a way that is satisfactory.
Any suggestions on a good way to hook it, shrimp size and hook size would be appreciated.
I also heard that some people cut the shrimp to smaller cubes.
In that case, what is a good way to hook them up?

after looping it tight you can wrap it up with some spider thread.

I just stick the hook through the shrimp, no bait loop or spider thread involved.  When sticking the hook through, i stick the hook point initially in line with where the backbone would be if shrimp had them, then out the side.  Usually shrimp will stay on a long time like this.  Try not let you shrimp skip violently across the water (or shore if you're being stealthy) as it flip off the hook.

A little bit of copper wire does the trick ;), it can be takin from any household appliance like her hair dryer or that ;D ;D, simply wrap it around your bait and either you line or peferably your hook, depending on your setup.

Hook cross-wise through the head of the prawn/shrimp tail. Once through is all you need to give it the perfect spin. It's caught me all my fish this year.

Little piece about the size of your thumbnail on a size 1 or 1/0 Gammy.
Put a little bit of orange or peach wool at the top, this will help hold on the prawn for a long time.
Just simply slide to prawn on the hook up to the wool, should stay on even if skipped across the water top. I only go through around 5 pieces a day doing this.

Exactly how Dion does it. The spin is deadly.

By "Hook cross-wise" do you mean "hooking it through one side of head of prawn tail and out the other side of head" or "hooking it through chin and out the top of the head"? I guess the prawn would be dangling from the bend of the hook?

Through one side out the other. Yes the prawn dangles past the end of the hook. I normally put a GLX egg above the prawn so that if it does happen to fall off during my cast or drift I will still have some sort of bait. I also like the contrast in colours.

Remember when fishing shrimp/prawns to start your retrieve slow. I've had more than one fish this season hammer my bait after 4 or 5 cranks of the handle.

have u considered ghost shrimp /sand shrimp (same thing)instead of frozen prawn. the only time i use frozen prawn is to put the  tail on the end of my jig

Sure we have, but driving out to a beach at low tide, spending time pumping bugs etc when steelhead seem to not mind a pink-dyed prawn tail doesn't seem worth the effort.

just a bit of common sense and some wrap of spider thread do much better.

I read sometime back (can't find the article now) that steelhead have "sweet tooth" and adding brown sugar with salt during prawn/shrimp curing will improve their effectiveness. Anyone tried this?
