A politician who's promising to help BC fisheries...
« on: February 20, 2011, 07:20:16 AM »

From George Abbott:  http://www.georgeabbott.ca/category/news-releases/

With one week left until the February 26th leadership vote, I wanted to take the opportunity to share an exciting announcement I made yesterday regarding our provincial parks, heritage and outdoor recreation.
This year marks the 100-year anniversary of BC Parks. As the one-year anniversary of the 2010 Winter and Paralympic Games turns our thoughts to the legacy of sport in British Columbia, it is easy to overlook our natural and historical legacies in the form of parks and protected areas, local and provincial heritage sites, and our outdoor recreational opportunities.
I believe that we need to do more to support these legacies and their value to families, while profiling our province’s assets and supporting our growing tourism industry.
Therefore, yesterday I announced a number of commitments to protect and enhance these assets for our residents and our visitors, including:

· Implementing a 10 percent increase to the Parks and Protected Areas budget for 2011/12 over the current anticipated budget;
· Eliminating day-use parking fees in all major provincial parks so that B.C.’s families can enjoy short-term recreation and activities free of charge;
· Tripling the Heritage Legacy Fund endowment to $15 million to support more grants to local heritage as well as provide stable funding for Heritage BC;
· Establishing a strategy to ensure the ongoing integrity and sustainability of devolved Provincial Heritage Properties across the province, such as Fort Steele, Barkerville, and Emily Carr House.
· Returning 100 percent of angling license revenues to Freshwater Fishing BC, the non-profit society responsible for enhancing recreational fishing in B.C., to further maintain and enhance our fisheries;
· Establishing a new Junior Fishing License designation to provide a lower priced fishing license for anglers aged 16 to 18;
· Providing additional funding for fisheries and wildlife inventories to support responsible, science-based fish and wildlife management;
· Improving fisheries and wildlife conservation and enforcement activities to ensure that outdoor activities are supported and lawfully conducted; and
· Restoring eligibility for direct access gaming grants to environmental and wildlife organizations that were previously ineligible.

I believe that through these investments, we can continue to make British Columbia’s parks, heritage and outdoors the envy of the world.

--George is just to nice to be premier. He'll be planting trees next as Forest Service 100th anniversary soon if there is anything left of it.

That's politics-take it all away and point to what a great job you've done saving money-then promise to give some back because you're so in tune/compassionate/such a nice guy.  >:(

I have, as most of the electorate, had it up to our collective ears with liars that say one thing and do the opposite once elected - But some are content with being spoon fed bullspit and just accept as part of life. Why would anyone NOT greet the "say one thing, do the opposite" of all politicians without cynicism is beyond me.

To those that stand up- good on ya!

--I think George Abbott would try to implement this if his urban buddies would let him  (kinda doubt it)... these are not big dollar programs yet they are a great benefit to smaller rural areas.  Most of these were cut just to prove government was cutting programs.
--The old Forest Service Camp sites at the time they were cut was only a saving of 2mil, the cut cost significantly more than that to rural economy and to those who cannot afford to pay more for camping than the tax dollars they already contribute to the common resource. At the time the forest service rec site program was cut... Forest service workers offered to Volunteer .. ie work for no pay on weekends to maintain several sites that were of significance to staff... many of these sites throughout the province had been dedicated as memorials.. Staff members often volunteered to clean and maintain these memorial sites and others that they also used themselves.

--The answer from the goverment.. we don't care to hear any proposals... the program will be cut.

Yes that's politics

Quite agree.

In a place as beautiful to live in as BC many people will accept lower paying jobs/poorer services just for the opportunity to live next to nature's bounty and this is how the Govt repays them-attacking/destroying one of their main reasons for living.

Off with their heads!

Abbot will get (BC) railroaded by Grisly Clark. She has the media behind her all the way. She dodged the bullet when the Basi/Virk uberswindlers didn't go to trial. So though she looks good after a few drinks, she got her money in fish farm stock.
