Well I have been out fishing pretty much daily for the last week and It has been stellar to say the least. I have been hooking up consistently 2 or more fish per trip not landing as many as I would like but the float has been going down a lot which is fun. Hooked 3 a couple days ago lost all of them then the next day hooked 2 landed 1 and this morning again hooked 2 and landed 1. All fish hooked on gooey bobs all in a 1 mile stretch of the river 1 run in particular has produced every time out gotta love Cowichan Chrome. Last year I must have fished 40 or 50 days with only 1 fish landed this year I got a Center pin and it has been lights out ever since I started using It and the Level wind is retiered for any float fishing from now on. I personally think this has been the reason for my success this season that and the use of fluorocarbon leader over ultra green.

Nice report. I used to fish the Cowie at alot! Caught many many steelhead there, using a level wind reel. I would say your success comes from being in the zone!Number one is proper presentation of your lure or bait in the type of water your fishing and covering that water effectively.Number two is fishing the productive areas, that is where fish are holding and/or the lanes of where their traveling through.Not so much the type of reel you are using.But hey we all need confidence in the gear that we use, so if thats what you think, your cp has turned things around then so be it.My lucky loonie and my flask in my pocket is my good luck charm.Tight lines.

I would also love to go up to Cowichan one of these day.
Also, thank for the tip on switching from ultra green to fluorocarbon.
I am also a die-hard ultragreen fan, but maybe I should give fluorocarbon a shot as I have not used them for steelhead so far.

Dennis it is definitely the CP that is making the difference for him! kidding I think that it really has to do with just finding a zone of the river that is holding fish and as you begin to get into fish you just have more confidence in that stretch of water so you spend more time there and learn it better and probably continue to hook more fish.

I fished the same stretch of river last year many days with only one fish to show for days of pounding it. I will agree being in the zone when fish are there helps and I have learned a ton from last year and applied this knowledge. All my presentations are smaller this year and leader length shorter 2' or less this has helped keep presentation in the zone. Also breaking the river down in a grid system working in 1' increments from shore to the middle has made a huge difference as I have hit so many fish with in 6' feet of the bank. Last year I was casting over the fish not covering the water effectively.

You are correct in that the Cowie fish often are tight to shore.It was amazing to watch my buddy set anchor tight to the bank and then let the float slip downstream directly behind the boat catching some enormous slabs!.I learned alot from this gracious Cowie veteran who allowed me the privilige to accompany him on his drift boat after meeting him at Stolzs one day when fishing from the bank .I lucked out into a slew of holding fish that day and he joined me after seeing my luck from afar.I then drifted the flow in my own boat with alot more confidence afterwards and had many a memorable day.Nice to hear of your success,thanks for sharing.

thats one of the main keys to  steelhead succses they sit often within 2 feet of the bank i have found and if its between rapid sets or in rapids and theres a small calm slick RIGHT along the bank fish it, i have got most my fish this season in a run 20 feet long and 4 feet wide and 4 feet deep right on the opposite shore. And sure its the new cp giving u the luck

i would say there is just more fish around this year then last year.
