After
Wednesday's success, we were pretty eager to get out again. We wanted to fish today, but we couldn't agree on where to go. Nina wanted to try somewhere new (different river) because she's bored with the Vedder now that she has caught her fish.
I was determined to go back so I could catch one as well... In the end I guess she took sympathy and let me go back to the Vedder.
We did the early afternoon start again. Even though it was raining in Richmond, the weather was surprisingly nice on the river. It remained cloudy with sunny periods throughout the afternoon. We started the trip with a brief chat with Alwaysfishing and Yoda. It has been two years since I last fished near Yoda and I couldn't recognize him, how embarrassing.
It happens pretty often actually, I blame it on my poor eye sight.
We worked the same runs. Nina started at where she caught her fish. She made her first cast, the float disappeared and took her by surprise. She pulled and nothing was hooked. The rest of the afternoon was pretty uneventful really. We fished two or three runs where we have fished before, then we found a couple other spots that looked fantastic but all attempts were unsuccessful.
The brief action that we experienced came just before sun down. On our way back we tried a spot where I had some success last month. After several casts, Nina was into a fish, but only for a brief moment. Like a desperate steelheader, I moved to her spot and gave it a go. Awhile later, I had a quick take-down. The take-down was such a classic bite that it almost seemed like slow motion, but I still missed the fish! A few minutes later, the float slipped under the water again, but I also missed it! In the end, we had nothing to carry back to the car except our rods and disappointment.
That being said, it was still a very enjoyable outing today. The river was really quiet! We bumped into one person throughout the day on our side while only seeing a few people on the other side.
We found this little guy frozen on the trail. I almost stepped onto it but thought it was dog poop at first.
We moved it to the side so it might have a chance to live through a few more cold spring nights.
While taking a break, Nina cleaned up some line and found a near new spinner at the end of it. Here's the hook of the spinner. Don't forget to pinch your barbs before heading out.
