With Spring Break coming to an end my nephew wanted me to take him fishing. He was enthusiastic and gung ho to go when I picked him up this morning. He had his boots, raincoat and fishing rod all ready to go. We decided to go to Rice Lake for stocked trout. When we arrived there were a few fishermen on the dock. They reported that there a few caught already. Because it was raining quite heavily we decided to forego the dock and find a more sheltered spot. We ended up at the north end of the lake in a bay sheltered by towering trees which offered some much needed shelter. Unfortunately the trout were not cooperating; we used krill, worms, powerbait, shrimps all to no avail. The tranquility of the lake was only spoiled by a few early morning joggers. After an hour and a bit we decided to call it a day. As my nephew was reeling in his line we heard a loud splash near some weeds. Naturally (as any good fisherman) he wanted to fish a few more minutes. He was tired of using bait and asked me to tie on a spinner. On his 5th cast he hooked something big. I thought it was a brood stock judging from the bend in the rod. After a few minutes of give and go he pulled in a 1-2 lb. bass ! I didn't realize Rice Lake had bass. My nephew is totally pumped and wants to go again tomorrow. An excellent day despite the inclement weather.
