Sturgeon in cultus lake
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:47:44 PM »

Today I was at cultus lake standing on a log at entrance bay I was standing on the logs you can see from the road when you come past the old marine. I was watching a turtle, when the turtle jumped into the water I looked into the water to see if I could see where it went and then what I saw almost made me fall off the log in surprise because there was a 6 foot sturgeon swimming in  the water just under the surface it blew my mind. So my question to the people in the know is what is it doing there, is it supposed to be there and are there more? Anyone with info on this that would be great thanks.

Yup theres sturgeon, I saw one going back almost 7-8 year swimming around under the docks. It was only around a foot and a half. I heard they are not white sturgeon, but green sturgeon...

A few years ago we captured a sturgeon in a trap net set for NPM.  Fish was about 6' and released unharmed - DNA showed it was a white sturgeon.  I have heard of several other sightings, some larger than 6'.  The story is about 30-40 years ago some well known local anglers caught a few from the Fraser and released them into Cultus.
Conditions for these fish are perfect as there is a ton of food available, with virtually no energy expended to get it.  Who knows, perhaps there is even a breeding population established 8)

Wonder if it would be worth it to go toss some dead NPM off the boat in some of the deeper sections.... Might pick up a dolly too.

So someone throwing sturgeon into the lake is how they got there that's the answer? They don't belong then, and there is no chance that they have always just been there? And what's the scoop on the lol's about the local angler thing, I am guessing you guys know who it was.

Yeah, we have all heard the rumours.  But the fact is small sturgeon could migrate up the Vedder River, swim up Sweltzer Creek and enter the lake naturally.

Dave, carefully not adding a winkie.

LOL Jeff!  If I was in your place, and one swam by at the size, I would have almost fallen off the log myself too.
