New docks at Gerry park
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:50:18 PM »

At Gerry Park located in the Village of Steveston & at the Harbour mouth is a new dock. 1/2 of it is open to the public.
It has a good safety fence thus to protect people from possibly falling into the Fraser R & depending on tides etc...fast currents.
The fence is alitlle lower than chest high on me so...I wonder if people will try to fish this new dock???
Esp when the pink start running.
The dock is quite wide & strongly built with alot of big pillars that hold it in place.
Nevertheless when wake hits it does move noticeably & the aluminum walkways leading to the dock make alot of noise.

Just a matter of time someone climbs over the fence & falls in to the river...There is a sign that says NO SWIMMING "fast currents" but I never saw a sign that said NO FISHING.
When the TALL SHIP FESTIVAL took place a 1.5 months ago they did tie up to the new dock.

I wouldn't want to be standing on that thing when the cargo ships go by. That dock rocks a lot when the waves hit.  :-\

Last time I was there the whole thing was closed.

With the Pink frenzy coming (and since most people are basically idiots) some dork or other will fall in and it'll all be closed for good.

You read it here first.

The rocks up stream are in the right place but are super slimy & muddy.

The safety fence is alittle bit built in from the dock so it is quite easy to climb over it & still have some dock to stand on...say a helper to net a guy's or gals fish.......but not a safe thing to do. On a ebb tide that current is really going fast...
Crazy yr as the Fraser R is usually quite clean looking by now but it is still very murky.

But your right Dogbreath some guy is going to fall in (hopefully get rescued) & they will put a NO FISHING SIGN along with the NO SWIMMING SIGN. But maybe not as there are accidents happening all the time on the roads pedal biking airplane crashes etc...but these activities just keep on going.
Plus quite a few have drowned trying to swim back from Shady Is.(Steveston Is.) ...they got to the island on low tide via the rock jetty at the east end ...then a flood tide came in....well things just go on & on......as usual.
As long as that fence is up the City of Richmond will not be on the hook for being sued (think that would be the main city's concern.)

Gee hope that dock is well lit up at night as I can also see the possibility of a boat or larger vessel ramming into it.
(not only at night but in foggy conditions)
But even as it is now it would be great to bring a lawn chair & some binooklers or field glasses & view the nature & boats passing by.......& inbetween read a good book OR shoot the breeze ;D

I'm just wondering what the docks are there for. I know the tall ships docked there this year, but it's been closed to the public since then.

Plainswalker actually two days ago when the wife & I pedal biked  around Gerry Park ( prior were biking on the west dykes) we saw that 1/2 of the dock was open for the public.
The other walkway to the eastern side of the park leading to that part had the enterance door locked. As mentioned the part now open to the public has a safety fence around the dock (closed part does not have the fence)

Think the City of Richmond will be having TALL SHIP FESTIVALS in the future so I guess they thought it was a good investment.
Kinda got mixed feelings about the dock as the park shore was more natural looking BUT if people are allowed to fish off of it during PINK RUNS etc...it is a big plus. Only thing it just may get too crowded.

Ah, good to know. I've gone by there a number of times in the past month and it's always been closed, or it looked like it anyway. It'd be good to see if we can fish off of it, for sure.

yes for the tall ships, it might get towed into the harbor if it gets beat up there, they are adding 600' more for the next tall ships event in a couple years.
