Fish (sockeye) taken by FN fishers are sold openly in the LML and even advertised on Craig list for sale ranging from $10.00 to $14.00. Is this legal? If it is not why is DFO not investigating it?
I understand FN are only allowed to take fish for food and ceremonial purpose.

A friend told me one can buy fish cleaned and vacuum packed for $14.00 from FN fishers  located in Hope.

Maybe someone here in this forum can help clear the air on this issue. Thank you.

D.F.O is powerless to stop the illegal selling of salmon by natives because the department has been slashed to the bone.They dont have the manpower or money to investigate these allegations, so instead turn a blind eye to the problem.For as long as people buy from the natives they will continue to sell.I have never bought from the natives and never will,but i know people who do. Im sure everyone knows of someone who buys from the natives.This is a problem that will never go away.Our fragile fisheries gets abused by all user groups including the sporties.

Even when DFO had the "power" and arrests were made, they never ended up being convicted and they never will.  Now that the DFO is skeleton they are too afraid to approach them - the poachers and sellers that is.

Our fisheries is not as fragile as the media makes it out to be.  Certain runs are fragile but I'm sure you know the Adams is alive and strong as well is the chilko, birkenhead, stuarts, pitt, ect....

I am not complaining.
I love sockeye season. I get to fill up the freezer with good protein for cheap.
All it takes is one phone call to the friendly first nations neighbor.
Gutted, cleaned and delivered...10 bucks a piece.
Nothing like helping our FN brethren make an extra buck or two as their life is tough as it is.

And I don't need to browse internet forums to learn about commercial openings.

Im willing to bet the bulk of cash goes to 5% of your "FN brethren" while the other 95% get nothing, there are "Classes" in all societies, your fooling yourself if you actually buy what your saying. IMHO

recreational sockeye retention opportunities at this time in the non-tidal
waters of the Fraser River in Region 2 due to a small total allowable catch and
uncertainty in the estimated returns.

Looks like the move to limit recreational sector access to sockeye in the same way Halibut is being managed has come to our doorstep even sooner than I expected...

Very scary indeed, that they are already using the term TAC in salmon fishery notices. I really hope DFO does not make the same mistake twice and like halibut, start handing out quota to commercial on what is a common property.
