Bear Bombs
« on: August 22, 2011, 10:22:31 AM »

I was in the valley last week and lost the counts of how many bears I saw in the span of 3-4 days :o I have a bear spray in my bag but it'd be good to have some of those bear bombs that you can quickly pull out and shoot to deter the bears away. Does anybody know where you can buy those in the Vancouver area? I already called A&N and they didn't have any.

3 VETS had them last year, not sure now. Try calling.

Also, that Army supply store on  East Broadway might.

When using a bear banger, make sure you launch it STRAIGHT UP, not toward the bear.

If angled toward the bear, it often flies past him and then explodes, bringing a scared/angry bear running in YOUR direction.  :o

Thanks for the advice DS.

I suspect I'll still need to keep the bear spray handy in case the animal is too close. Black bears are very hungry and desparate for food this summer. We better be prepared when we go out for camping or fishing trips.

If they are close enough to be a threat, spray will work 10x better than bangers, and as DS suggests the use of bangers can be problematic.  You may just piss the bear off or make it on edge.

Basically, a bear over there is a bear over there.  No sense scaring them for no good reason.

you can also go into any hunting/gun shop and they will have them. I know that Hatch Matchr's in Maple Ridge carries them as well. I always carry bear bangers and flares plus bear spray with me when out fishing.

MEC has them for sure.

When I see a bear I try to get my camera and that seems to scare them away.
