First time fishing in the Chilliwack area
« on: September 09, 2011, 11:49:59 PM »

Hi all, I will be down in the Chilliwack area for a fishing trip October 17th -20th and will be heading out on the Fraser for 1day Salmon and 1day sturgeon and we will be camping somewhere along the Vedder and getting our lines wet a bit there hopefully when not out on the Fraser.

My question is (and I hope its allowed and I can get some good honest advice on it :)) is where one would recommend setting up camp for ease of access to some decent holes? Normally I would not ask anything like this and would suss out the holes and options myself but as I have never been in the area at all and will have very limited and short times to hit the Vedder I was hoping for some possible assistance.

After a bit of research online camping/fishing wise we are trying to figure if our best bet would be to camp at: Vedder River Campground - Tahimi Creek - Allison Pool or Thurston Meadows?? All I am asking for is which one of those campgrounds would you all recommend most for ease of access to less fished/less busy holes/areas?Of course we as well would be willing to walk up or down a bit from the campsite but at the same time would not want too far as we may only have a 2-3hrs in a day to try it out.

Of course please feel free to just PM me the info as well! or email at mz_mann@yahoo.ca

Thanks all.

Allison Pool campground has been closed for a # of yrs now,not sure why.Was a nice spot to camp.I have camped at Tamahi and Thurston meadows and both are decent campgrounds.Tamahi will be less busy,as you might even have the place to yourself as most of the camping takes place in the summer months. With Tamahi you could fish the boulder holes for coho as they are passing through.  ;)

You can camp at Alison, but you have to book the whole campsite if you want it! What kind of fishing are you going to be doing? If you are on the fly then the Vedder river campground might be your best bet, better fly water down lower. If not Thurston Meadows would be the best bet as its the most out of the way if you are fishing gear, but to be honest everywhere on the river is going to be pretty busy. Am sure you will have a bast wherever you stay.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, much appreciated!! :)

We will indeed be fishing gear and not on the fly. Hmmmmmm, ok so basically now I have it narrowed down to Thurston Meadows and Tamahi...bit of mixed thoughts so far from everyone on them two I guess, lol.

Which would maybe be best for having the most holes that are easily walked to in not too far of distance's from camp sites?.....so wishin I was fishin right now and not stuck on the other side of the world workin dammit! :(

Thanks again for all the help people!

Tamahi is closer to town and has walk in spots around the campground. Thurston is a little further up the rd and also has fishing spots close by.Vedder camp ground,I cant vouch for it as i have never camped there, its on the Yarrow side of the river also with fishing spots close by. I stay away from the Vedd during salmon season and only fish it through the winter months for steelhead so i cant really give you any good coho spots to try.Others on this board might help you out with some info in that regard.Cheers.

Also be prepared to do some walking, as that will get you away from the crowds. October can be a busy month on the Vedder, and you will see some stuff being done that will make you say OMG.....as it can be quite a "gong show" at the heavily fished meat holes on the Vedder.

Thanks guys, and yeah we were kinda figuring that we would have to do a bit of walking to get away from the crowds and such as well as realizing that because of how busy it will be there is bound to be lots of wtf's and omg's going on. We were kinda expecting the whole "gong show" thing no matter where we decided to camp but luckily most of the time there we will be out on a boat on the Fraser away from most of it :)....Actually contemplated staying up at the Chehalis campground but heard its pretty bad up there as well and not to mention much more out of the way....figure thats an extra 45min or so of walk/fishing time that we can gain by staying at either Tamahi or Thruston......I think what we will probably do is just drive to both when we get there mid day and then decide from there........anybody think we will have any problem getting a spot at either (preferrably water front of course) or does one think that calling ahead and reserving is better......we were thinking that with it being so bust on the river fishing wise that it would also pack the campgrounds up at that time as well no?.....keeping in mind that we will also be arriving on a Monday though so I guess should probably be ok?

Cheers and thanks for all the great info again :)

Wont be very many people camping that time of yr bro. No need to book ahead. You have the right idea about driving and checking both spots out.For me,I need to see the spot where im going to camp and get the right feeling about it. You know when its right! Have fun man!

Thurston has some gorgeous places. It's always nice to camp right next to your hole! When the fish are running, it's a blast to be there. Bring waders and bug spray to prep your day for a nice spot - good luck!

thurstons a nice camp ground i camp there often from september-april. tamihia is nice but the rivers busy down there. at thurston i just use waders and cross the river and fish from the other side, almost no people and you find a lot of gear people have lost on the rocks on the other side.

lots of gear and no people? Wouldnt there have to be a lot of people there to leave the gear?

The gear he's referring to was lost from people casting from the opposite side.
