Thoughts/Help.
« on: September 15, 2011, 02:59:24 PM »

Just wondering a couple small things before embarking on my first Vedder & first ever river salmon trip in mid October.....I will be using a float setup with my Abu 6500C3 and.....well not yet decided on my rod so far. However I believe I will have a Shimano Convergence Salmon/Steelheader 10'6" with me either way as I just could not pass up the deal they had on them at wholesale sports for $52.88!!....good backup to have at the very least and may even use it as my main for now but just not yet sure.

Forgive me if some of this has been discussed elsewhere or if these seem like "newbie" questions but really they kind of are, lol  ;D

Roe: Bags or no bags?
What is everyones opinion on bags vs baitloop?
How big of bags to tie if one does use bags?
I will more than likely be purchasing my Roe locally when I get there....or possibly from this place.....depending on what kind of responses and recommendations I get of course!!!... http://www.centerpinangling.com/spawn-products.html (no I have no affiliation of any sort with them, just something I found while surfing around, lol)

Any recommendations as to where to get good/decent quality roe locally? And will there be any problem getting it locally between Oct 17th and 20th? (any supply issues?)
Brand to look for?

I have heard that just using a baitloop may be more effective? Of course I realize that I would probably be going through much more roe with the bait loop and store bought roe.
As well I believe that if indeed I went the baitloop route then purchasing from the above site would not make any sense really as they are all loose eggs....and my understanding with the baitloop is to just take a skein of eggs and tie it into the baitloop?....Piercing the skeins with the hook as well for help with keeping it on and maybe adding a bit of wool to hide the hook?

Any help/suggestions/direction that may help in this is much appreciated :)

Cheers,

Check out the official roe thread, lots of relevant information on the question in there:

Personally, I prefer using pieces of roe for coho instead of roe bags. I've used both and roe pieces have produced better, even though they generally do not last as long on the hook.

Phone Fred's Custom Tackle (since it's the closest to the Vedder) and see if they have any fresh or cured roe. Chilliwack Dart and Tackle is also another nearby option.

exactly what Rod has said. Pieces of roe for coho unless the water you are having to cast over is moving rather quickly then I like to use bags as the pieces of roe come off when you reel in and the roe is in the fast moving water.

Now for steelhead I use bags as the water and air is just too cold to get the hands wet.

So with the pieces/chunks of roe do you then just use them in a bait loop knot? and do you pierce the skein at all/fold over so it pierces twice to maybe help it stay on a bit better?

Thanks so much! :)

This site really is a great resource! Keep up the good work Rod!

I think everyone has their own preference on how the roe pieces are hooked. I've seen my friends simply tightening it with the bait loop. Personally I pierce through with the hook once, then secure it with the bait loop.

For me it all depends on how the hook sites when I tighten the loop. If the hook ends up pointing up then I will run the hook threw a piece of the roe.

Don't forget to bring wool in every color imaginable.  For some reason, the right combination and size of wool tie can outfish roe quite often.

Really?  I have yet to see it.
Before last season, I hadn't either.  Then the guy next to me hooked 3 coho on purple wool while I had been using roe for hours and got nothing.

Consider me a skeptic as well.  ???

Assuming we are talking about biting fish.

Reasons I don't believe these fish were flossed - they were short-floated in the middle of a deep run (or at least appeared to be from the depth he was fishing) above the Kayak course (as opposed to somewhere like whitewater or the tailout where you see the fish), they appeared to be hooked inside the mouth (from where I was standing), the bite was only on for the hour or so that the sun was behind the top of the hill, and other anglers doing exactly the same thing with other colors or offerings were getting nada.  I know it sounds crazy, but coho really do bite a well presented wool tie, especially when they are in walking-speed "steelhead" water (and it helps if the water has some color to it).  It just seems really hard to find them in this type of water when they are sharing the river with springs.  Perhaps coho that have been "stung" by roe on a hook are more wary of it?

In any case, don't forget the wool anyway since in my experience, the color of wool you have with your roe can also make a big difference.  Is this also a controversial statement?

Make sure you open the cured roe Freds sells, and take a good look at it first. Some of the roe batchs they sell there is complete crap, but not always.
