Capilano River, September 24th 2011
« on: September 24, 2011, 11:25:04 PM »

Went to see what all the fuss was about. Should have gone minnow fishing at the duckpond instead.

Although some fish were seen in the system I couldn't get any to bite. I have never seen this many people there before - the easier access spots were a gong show on both sides of the river. Lots of people using laughable gear and dads and sons fishing in the most ridiculous of places. Just get in everyone's way. Snagging was definitely the preferred method by most, though even these guys didn't do well. It doesn't make sense to me - bait is the only thing those fish will take pretty much and the bait ban only encourages other stupid my friend behavior like intentionally snagging fish while aiming for the mouth...guys i watched waited till fish were in front of them then casted and did the famous "vedder pullback". disgusting.

Water level dropped like crazy, 1.5 feet now, native weir is still in tact therefore looks like there wont be many fresh fish entering until another rainfall.

Fraser fishing is over and all the Fraser fishermen are now dispursed to smaller rivers.
They bring their leaders with them too.
10' leaders are now standard prett much everywhere.
Fish weren't biting yesterday for the most part and I saw 4 adult springs taken by "the leaders" from 1 run.
Not Capilano though.
A whole lot of illegal stuff going on too.

No definately not any decent number of fish. The fish all came in at once 2 days ago and by now are at the hatchery. Need another big rain, like 5-6 ft on the weit big.

Lol @ adriaticum. Maybe I should lengthen my leader another 9 feet maybe then I'll catch something!

fishhunter,  I was there too and observed pretty much the same thing though not quite as bad as what you witnessed (Both days trying my luck, nothing caught).

I have heard the endless snagging debates and its frustrating to see people using questionable techniques and often times catching more than anyone else around them.    Unfortunately people that are new to this sport and who don't know much about the regs resort to the same techniques because they think that is what they have to do to be successful.

There seems to be a mentality that catching is more important regardless of the means used to do it...Oh, well.

There were certainly a lot of fish in the deeper pools that were attracting all the attention but I did not see much evidence of them in the smaller pocket water that I was trying to fish most of the time.

Agreed, one thing that bothere me most after watching this guy Stan there staring inthe water and cast only when seeing fish move in was that there were 4 or 5 younger guys around and got really excited seeing the fish and said "what are you using!!!!?" and I overheard and told them "he's trying to snag them in the mouth, flossing - those fish aren't biting" of course they didn't know what this was and then asked 'what's flossing?' so I held up  my line to my open mouth and showed them. They were confused. I then left because they now overcrowded my small piece of beach I was fishing off of alone.

It's just sad that these inexeperienced new anglers are itching to catch a fish and then these heroes are there pretending to legitimately catch fish when they are snagging them but to the new guys they think he's just a great fisherman.

Illegal.

Update: I actually got a nice chrome jackspring yesterday, but I was there for 12 hours and that was my 2nd bite only. There's bound to be more fish in there right now because of the rain but I think I'm gonna just save my energy for the vedder this week ^^

Pretty messed up how people use illegal tactics to fish...the only group of people that are allowed to fish outside the rules are the FN.
