Buddy and I went out at Kilby Sunday trying for the pinks below the rail bridge to no avail . Last week they were pretty aggressive and were hitting on the flies . Not this time ,so we tried up river . Nothing going on up river . Lots of Socks jumping , floating to  . We whipped a few more cast and then buddy gets a hard hit , just as I was packing up the boat to leave . After a good battle we are surprised to see it's a big chummy bobber .trying to win over the fight. Then as buddy tries too curl the  big buck around close to shore so we can tail um " KAPOW "  , Buddy's fly rod explodes  . yet we did manage to tail it    . And Thar he be  .

Oh and , just a question .
How would you describe the sound of your rod breaking ?

i still remember the heart-breaking " snapzzzzzz " sound when my first trophy XL cp rod broke into halves while landing a big bad chum at the chedder......it still hurts me when i remind myself of that:-*

I hear you guys. I just have had my new 8 wt fly rod snapped on me two times in two weeks. Never had any of my rods broken on me before by either playing or landing fish until this new fly rod.

Gosh! still remember my Sage custom built snapped at the butt section landing a big buck Chum at Stave a few years ago ...ouch$$$!!!

I've busted two tips on lighter fly rods and they were the same sickening "SNAP".    Nice chum btw, that must of been a lot of fun

Don't feel bad I broke mine in the truck even before I got fishing was 100 miles from home too.

Ha, Ha, how 'bout this one... I broke my rpl+ 5wt on a loon that kept attacking my trout at the side of the boat. He kept swimming under the boat and I was an idiot to keep poking at it to scare it off.

I've seen a few guys break rods while trying to release chum...that fatal mistake of grabbing the rod halfway to the first guide with one hand....snap!

Nice picture though Armytruck...maybe I'll run into you around the frogpond this year....never went up last year.

This is BANG on!  Apparently, rods are designed to distribute strain throughout the length of the blank (the graphite part of the rod).  Holding onto anything above the cork/handle of the rod re-distributes that strain, and throws off the delicate balance between the rod bending and the rod breaking.

No matter how tired your wrist is from being torqued against a big chum or other fish, NEVER grab (or even put a couple fingers on) the blank above the handle of the rod to try and get a bit of extra leverage.  It's a recipe for a broken rod.

This is just what I've learned, but fortunately not from experience.

Sage advice Tex and BN  Also when bringing in drift wood with a fly rod try and get a hold of your line and hand bomb it without putting a large bend in the tip of the rod

I`m curious to know what make and model the fly rod was and where the break happened. High modulus fast/tip flex rods can be very brittle when trying to land a zombie like the one pictured. I use a little lighter tippet in hopes a foul hooked chum breaks the fly or if the rod is in a weird position when landing a big fish and the fish bolts away unexpectedly the line breaks instead of the rod.
