After concluding my fishing day I stopped by the river to see how things were going. Quite a few anglers out, with more to come. The spawning channel was occupied by families viewing the spawning salmon and no anglers, thankfully.

They updated the freshwater regs to make it permanently closed to all fishing.

It is about time.  It is too bad that a change effective in 2009 could not have made it into the 2110-2011 regs.

Was out there today and it was a real piss storm!. It was slow all day, only a few chum caught at the spot we were at.  Does anyone know if there is a closer boat launch to stave river than haney marine on fraser river?

I don't understand this fishery. Mouldy chum should be left to spawn.

This is my vote for dumbest post of the year.
Chum (and particularly Stave chum) are some of the toughest fighting fish in fresh water.
They put coho and steelhead to shame for fighting ability in the same weight class and bruisers approaching 20lbs will destroy a jig.
They are aggressive and willingly take artificials (flies, spoons, jigs) and if you C&R why wouldn't you fish for them?

Forget C&R, if you are allowed to retain a chum, why not?  They are not all moldy.

I used to fish Stave River pretty regularly and enjoyed it very much. I have not been back for several years during the salmon season because there are nicer places to fish, but at times I have thought about returning. Chum salmon can be a fantastic gamefish if they are targeted properly. Float fishing by keeping the presentation away from the bottom entices the fresher ones in the system to bite. I find a piece of chartreuse wool works very well. Sometimes dead drifting a float with some roe under it in the toilet bowl can be just as fun. Those coho jacks can steal the bait so quickly and you have to be fast on the hook-set to catch one. Sometimes an adult coho salmon will surprise you too.

Fresh chum salmon can be excellent eating as well. This particular fish caught in 2008 was prepared into pieces for fish and chips.

If coho salmon are not biting, then I am just as happy with chum salmon taking my offering. Too often anglers take them for granted and some even abuse their abundance.  Hopefully coastal chum salmon populations across BC will make a rebound in the near future. This is another case of not knowing how good we have it until it is gone.

I have gone to the Stave about three times, and each time I was met with tons of people mostly snagging zombies. I would love to fish for chum like those in your photos, so maybe I will try to find a piece of water with not so many people and maybe go sooner rather than later in the season.

Well I didn't post that last reply the way I wanted to so I'll try again. Don't know why there's not a delete last post button available (or maybe there is and I can't see it).

Could'nt agree more Rod. The few times I visit I have always had a good time and usually catch some fish. Chum are so strong. The only two times I've had fishing rod's break on me was at the Stave River playing a chum.

If I was going chum fishing on the Stave it would definitely not be on a weekend.

Also people gather around the same spots and a little walking usually finds decent water.

We did very well on Monday, catching more than 50 between 3 of us.
No coho and nothing chrome, just lots of ridiculously strong fighting fish.
I don't know if the chum are hanging out at road accessible areas.
