Squamish River
« on: October 06, 2011, 09:37:17 AM »

I am just wondering if anyone has been to the Squamish lately and if there are chum and coho starting to show up?  I am heading up that way on the weekend.  Thanks.

Watch the hydro charts to see if the water levels drop. It's probably blown with all the rain we've had.

There should definitely be some coho in there right now, but I'm also wondering...

What's the cheak like? Is the water fishable? I appreciate the report as it might save me a considerably long drive to find it's blown out. Thanks guys

I was just up there last weekend (Oct 1st and 2nd).  Dead as can be... dead as in there was nothing showing up in terms of coho or chum, and dead as in lots of dying and dead pinks everywhere.  The water level was quite low as well.

Squamish is bank to bank and dirty as can be, Chek is 1 ft at best.  Lots of bears in the area...

In prime shape, but still void of fish.

Went for a hike up there today.  Squamish visibility is about 1' and with last years flood, the river bank is largely covered in jammed up wood making access difficult on foot.  Lots of black bear sign.

Thanks

That's how I found it last Friday.  Some pretty nasty fish rotting on the shorelines.

When do we expect the coho and chum to start moving in?

In a normal year they would be there in decent numbers already.
This last few years returns have been dismal, and this year is shaping up to follow that trend.

We should leave the system alone and hope it rebounds in coming years.

I've been in the area looking around and chum thus far are very sparse. It's definitely looking like its shaping up to be another poor return. Agree with Milo.
