I want to pick up a spinning rod to fish spoons/spinners for coho on streams like the Vedder.  Looking for something that can cast spoons from 3/8 to 5/8 oz. 

What rod length/line weight/action should I be looking for?  What pound test should I run for a mainline?  Recommendations for a rod sub $100?

I’ve been using a 9’ Trophy TG290C rated for 8-15 lb test which I find absolutely perfect for prey in the 6-10 lb range. I also use 20lb Power Pro, though 8-10lb mono would also be appropriate.

It’s right at the top your budget limit though; $99 if I recall.

i went cheap since i only use it for a short part of the season, and it came with a reel.
i spooled it with 10lb.

I don't fish mine anymore, but it is my to go loaner for friends who can't fly fish or cast a levelwind.
Awesome spinning rod. match it with a vintage ABU Cardinal 55 spinning reel and it is the cat's behind.

Shimano Corte 4-10 pnd, light weight, medium fast action, 8 ft long, 1/32 to 3/8 lure weight.
Wholesale had it on sale for $95 with taxes... Amazing rod. Has handled springs up to 15 pnds in the 3 week I've had it.

I have it paired with a shimano solstice reel, 6 pnd ultra-green main line with a 12 pound leader.
Light line gives farther casts while beach fishing. The 12 pnd leader is to handle to coho rolls and teeth.

Pick up a small levelwind and lightweight 9' rod maybe?

Have two unused spinning reels sitting here without rods, don't really want fish spoons with another levelwind.

army & navy have rapala spinning rods 9ft  for aroung 58 dollars,i used one for pinks in the fraser and its good. RSC series.

I think Berkley IM8 spinning rod in 8.5 feet, medium action, 8-12lb line weight would be ideal for coho fishing.
During pink season I used the 9 feet, light action version of the same rod and it was an absolute blast.
Landed many pinks, including a 10lb brute, using light spoons and it held up very well.
It's very light and strong for it's weight due to use of high modulus graphite blanks.
I think Army & Navy sells them for less than $100.
