Had a couple hours of free time this morning so I headed out to the catch a bit of the incoming tide.  For the first hour of light only bullheads ate my roe, a bit later a solid hit and it was fish on! After the hook set the fish did a couple cartwheels followed by a nice figure eight across the surface of the water. I thought it was a coho for sure but low and behold it was a chum.

As far as Fraser chum go it was fairly fresh and still sporting some sea lice. A bit of a surprise because all the chum I have caught in the past while bar fishing were a result of the fish running into the bar rig, where as this fish hit like a coho and swallowed the roe rather deep.



For the record these fish color up quick and this one looked alot brighter at 8am.

nice chum. i also have caught chum on roe usually later in the month. they are chrome when first caught but within 10 to 20 minutes discolor rapidly. ni other salmon does that so quickly.

Nice chum... I've only hooked two chum salmon by bar fishing with roe in the last 15 years down here. One was last year, which snapped the line after a strong run and jump.

I didn't have much time to fish on this sunny weekend so today I went down to Garry Point for an hour just before sun down and managed to find a bull trout. Just before I was leaving, when the small incoming tide started picking up, I could see fair amount of chum salmon rolling into the system. It's the first time this season that I've seen chum salmon down here, hopefully more will start showing up.

I went out both Saturday and Sunday to catch the incoming tides.  Saw plenty of fish rolling/jumping on both days.  My wife lost 2 Coho close to shore on both days (she still has yet to catch one - so i felt bad for her), and I managed to catch a Chum on a home made green spinner on Saturday (he hammered it), and I caught another Chum yesterday on a 50/50 Gold/Silver BC Steel Spoon.  These were the first 2 Chum I've ever caught on the Tidal Fraser, and I couldn't believe it because Rodney has always said its virtually impossible to catch Chum in the Tidal Fraser.  Glad to know its possible to catch them, as they just came out of the smoker and are absolutely delicious!  Going to try again tomorrow.

How do u guys know when the tides are?  When are they?

You have to taste the water to know how much salt is in it.

Then you can tell how much the tide is coming in.

Tide charts work too, but real fisherman use the taste test.
