Knowing today is going to be another sunny day and water vis being good and low.  Friend and I decided on an early start.
We arrived at the river around 6am.  It was still pitch dark.  The two of us stand at the trail entrance and glared at the misty dark
pathway.....   Okay forget it, let's not chance it.  What if bears also decided on an early start.  So back to the truck we waited.
About 6:45 we started our hike-in.  It's still not bright but at least we can see 30~50ft ahead of us.  After xx:xx of hiking we arrived
at our run.  We started fishing right away and...  DIP DIP   Double header!!  We kept just enough tension on the fish so not to spook
what might still be in the water and slowly guided the two fish to shore.  Not bad both were hatchery about 6~7lb.  The action was
intense.  We had our limit within 2 hours.

Nicely done, all I got to bite was a small doe chum that fell off at the beach, I believe they are closed as of the 15th but not sure as have not checked the regs on that for the fishing notice. Anyway, because of the low numbers I did not plan on keeping one anyway.

Chum is closed because of low numbers?

So why do we have commercial net fisheries for chum up in the Johnstone Strait this week?  I'm I missing something here?

Not that I am interested in targeting chum but if they are in as poor shape as we've seen, what could possibly be reason for these openings.  It would be nice to get some sort of explanation.

Don't know. Chum are not closed in the Fraser, Stave, Harrison or Chehalis systems.

because they have commercial openings does not mean they are catching much,cant get whats not there.i would like to see landing numbers from these openings.looking at albion test fishing you would think the fraser + would be shut down.

Also had a early start. Second cast fish on. Limit on the beach by 7:30. Beautiful day!

As Chum typically have a 4 year life cycle, I'm seriously wondering if the lack of Chum this year is due to the really high water in the first few days of November 2007.  Since it moved so many trees and runs, it could have easily washed out, or silted up, all the redds.

The chum are thick on other rivers, funny that the run is down on the vedder.

  Probably due to the fact that there is not as much netting down towards the rivers you are talking about.

I am not going to name the flows in which I have seen them. Other than naming them what else would you like me to say?
