to me the term beak allways stood for a little more polite way [If there is such a thing] of calling someone a goof, moron,or idiot.

Beak is not an acronym for anything as far as I know.

...I think it refers to fishermen who likes to congregrate together fishing a certain hole....for example,  the Keith Wilson Bridge.

I assume the name came from birds behaviour ( thus the term BEAK ). When they find a food source, they will all flock to the same general area feeding off that source.

That my two cents worth.

We used to call them Beakers and over time this got shortened down to just beaks.
I'm not sure the original origin but I assumed it was in reference to the Muppet character Beaker who was absent minded and just kind of stumbled around wreaking havoc.

Beek discussion from 2005:
http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=7600.0

This was my favourite:
Nina's take on a "beak" as being something positive is correct. When fishing the Vedder in the late 40's, 50' and 60's a beak at that time meant a fisherman that really knew what he was doing. On the river a lot, catching fish properly and expertly and knowing and using the etiquette of the river. It certainly wasn't a derogatory term originally, but the meaning seems to have changed to the negative over the years. I always liked the term, and even used it in my original e-mail address until the negative connotation started to appear. In our circle of fisherman friends who have been at it for a long time, we still refer to each other as "beaks", and this is a compliment!

I thought it meant a term for a person who keeps ready to spawn and/or spawned out salmon that sport the hooked beak.  Then it grew to refer to just a run of the mill river-tard.

I like Damien's explanation: "River-tard"

But I do believe CohoMan's is probably the best.

wonders if someone that snags salmon looks down on other people as beaks. Are there bigger beaks within the group of beaks... kind of like inception

my assumption from reading many posts is that is was directed primarily towards a certain fisherman who in the act of flossing would hook the fish in general mouth area ie ....BEAK ....and therefore deam it acceptable to keep under the general regulatory standards.

So in essence a BEAK is one who snags fish whether it be in a populated spot like Pegleg or otherwise. But they do seem to flock together to protect the society and keep us ethical fisherman from saying too much.

The term beak was around long before flossing got popular.

Once again, the prevous posters demonstrate their ignorance. It'ss tough being the only one around here who gets things right.

Originally, BEAK was an acronym for "Big, Enormous, Awesome Kype". When an angler kept a ripe spawning salmon (the ones with a kype), they were called a beak.

Now the word is used to denote any angler other than oneself.
