Ignorance is not the right word. Maybe you were joking ......i dont know.
I think myself and others find it interesting, although pretty much trivial, as to the "origin" of the word. Nothing serious.
Some of the posters are more towards how it is interpreted today and higher percentage towards non traditional sport fishing practices.

Hey Clarki, before calling people ignorant, try reading;
Ignorance is not the right word. Maybe you were joking ......i dont know.

My response was a bit of http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hyperbole with a great deal of http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/jest

I was trying to be witty and clever without relying upon a winky emoticon. I failed.

clarki - Tone of words and sarcasm are always misenterpreted via emails. I get into trouble always as well. Appreciate your explanation.

Salmonpirate - This is classic by todays standards. No one by old school meaning will ever be held in high regard by being called a BEAK after this one.

Word on the street (or river, lake, whatever) is that a beak has been redefined as anyone who uses the website Fishing with Rod. ;)

So know we have been told "we are all Canucks" and "we all are beaks". This labeling has to stop. LOL.

A few examples of beaks are people who,
 float floss
use spinning reels upside down and reel backwards
use barbed hooks
keep rotten fish thinking "its good for the smoker"
b.b  for fish other than sockeyes (some will say ANYONE who bb is a beak)
believe sockeye like colored wool
bass fishermen

The list is endless. Good thing steelhead are right around the corner and majority of beaks will be hibernating till next salmon season

Bass fishermen?  That's just a stupid thing to say.  So I guess the majority of Prairie & East Coast Canadian Fishermen, and U.S. fishermen are beaks then, huh?  I guess they have all those Tournaments & and a huge industry for Beaks.  Even video games based on beaking?

It's great that the original poster asked about what a beak is, because I was thinking of doing the same.  I assumed that a beak means a meat fisherman who likes to fish and keep moldy salmon, like birds do.  And who gather by the flock-load and fish a particular spot.  Beaks basically do no involve any sport into fishing.
