If you catch and retain a fish it is part of your limit. If you give it to someone who is not at their residence then you must provide them with a letter.

I have no experience with this, but do rivers usually become less crowded once the retention of salmon is not allowed? I was on the Stave on Wednesday and it was pretty packed (person every 30ft or so), im assuming it was because it was the last day of Chum retention.

30ft?? That's a luxury for the Staver River, there's extra space left over beside fitting two 10.5' rods in there. ;D

Typically catch and release fisheries receive less pressure, but since there are other species that are open for retention (coho salmon), it just might be as busy as before. That being said, it is now wetter and colder, which is usually a big factor when it comes to thinning out crowds.

Have a good fishing weekend everyone.

I have the type of question as Jewelz.  Will there be many people fishing the Stave tomorrow, given that there's no Chum retention?

Second question, I've never fished the Stave.  Which side do most go to, west or east?  Please don't reply to go and look for yourself, I'm not asking for key spots, it's just a general question.  Thanks in advance.

The east side is usually the busier side as it offers more parking options.

Depends on the kind of fishing you are going to do.

Float/Gear is good on both sides, but is better on the West Side IMO.

Fly, The East side has better slower water to fish, but the West side has some GREAT water down closer to the Trailer park if you are chasing Coho.

When I was there the east side of the river was way busier. But if you don't mind going for a little walk, park on the east side at the dam parking lot and then walk across the dam to the west side.

Another question, there was no one fishing in the stream that is just south of the boat launch, is there a reason for this? I know that north of the boat launch is off limits, but not the south. Does this just have to do with respecting those fish that are heading up to the spawning channel?

There are many guys fishing the side channel that you are talking about to the East (Or south) of the Boat launch. Today there were 5 guys in there at first light, and I have also fished in there many times.

You do want to try to be a bit careful though, I try my best NOT to enter the river as the side channel is FULL of Redds.

Also, you can park on the west side, there is a park about 400-500 yards down stream from the dam on the west side that you can park in.

I think you're speaking of the Ruskin spawning channel... its closed to fishing.

The spawning channel is above the boat launch, not below.
