what are commercial fleet fishing for?
« on: October 28, 2011, 01:42:45 AM »

I noticed commercial fishing boats setting up nets on the lower fraser before steveston between ladner and richmond today. Are they gillnetting coho? chum? Wouldnt this risk Thompson Steelhead?
Im curious what these boats were up to..

Most years they do a chum fishery about this time of year. It's lways controversial because of the Thompson steehead. Doubly so this year since chum numbers are low.  :(

First Nations communal chum salmon openings.

Because the current estimated run size is below the 800k escapement requirement, there are no commercial (including First Nations' economic opportunities) and recreational openings expected in the Fraser River.

Couldn't find this anywhere in DFO's openings.  ???

So they've closed everyone down for a so called communal opening @ the peak of the run ... by what the test sets now show? PRICELESS!!!

btw - the effect??? ...

Unless natives' fishing rights are revoked, DFO has no choice.

It's not that just DFO has a choice ... the natives have a choice also. I'm sure the band leaders are well aware of the chum return situation. IS this communal necessary, on top of their sockeye?

Poor chums get bonked for their big eggs more than anything else as their meat is not much of a table fare for most people.

I thought that conservation concerns trumped even native fisheries.

correct conservation trumps native rights, but the commercial fleet should have been shut down weeks ago. dfo states that test fishing early oct showed in dna 35-40 percent fraser river chums, then the seiners did the job. thats why they are not in the fraser.
